Just when we thought the party was over for the internal combustion engine muscle car, Ford announced the latest Mustang GT with a 5.0-litre V8 engine. The 7th generation Mustang was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, with a statement from Ford CEO Jim Farley, ‘Investing in another generation of Mustang is a big statement at a time when many of our competitors are exiting the business of internal combustion vehicles.’

Mr. Farley goes on to say, ‘Ford is turbocharging its ICE growth plan, adding connected technology, opinionated derivatives, and hybrid options to our most profitable and popular cars – all in the Ford Blue family – on top of investing $ 50 billion in electric vehicles through 2026.’

The new Mustang promises to be the best yet with an upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine. A new air induction system, dual air intake and throttle, six driving modes, and yes it will be thirsty, predicted to sip 24 to 25mpg.
As for the transmissions available, there should be a 6-speed manual and a 10-speed automatic, along with 19-inch alloy wheels, and Brembo brakes. The cabin will also have some tasty updates such as a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster, HD driver display, and plenty of safety features such as Speed Sign Recognition, and Lane Centring Assist. Basically, all the mod cons you would expect from a 2023 vehicle, just without the electric motor bits.

Electric or ICE?

It’s obviously commendable of Ford to carry on the charge of the mighty V8, but how long will this last? While the likes of Dodge has openly stated electric is the future, they are still rolling out their ‘Last Call’ ICE vehicles, such as the 2023 Dodge Charger King Daytona.

Dodge’s take on these last-call models harks back to the classic muscle car days, but they will be limited edition models, not mainstream offerings like the Mustang. At this point, the writing on the wall is that Dodge is fully committed to e-muscle in the next few years, while Ford is plowing on the head with ICE’s and as for Chevrolet, we will have to wait and see.

However, reading between the lines, it will be around 2030 when new ICE vehicle sales will be phased out. Then a few years after that before we see fewer and fewer ICE’s on the road. That means we could have 15 years as of now for ICE’s to be enjoyed to their fullest. If we follow this simplistic line of thought, then it is no wonder that the Mustang has plenty of years left in ICE form.

In reality, Ford is beavering away in the background just as vigorously as any of the others with electric motors. The Mustang SUV thingy is the obvious signpost to this way of thinking, they just haven’t fully committed publicly to turning the hallowed Mustang GT electric, yet.

We just want them to go ‘Vroom’

At heart, we humans are simple creatures. We like good vibrations, and symphonic sounds, which is why the V8 has lasted so long. So, expect quite a few V8 models to to come our way in the next few years. Many will be limited edition models, but they will be out there.

One such tasty model is Trans Am Worldwide’s Chevelle Super Sport, a recreation of the classic 1970s model. Not only does this offering look like a great modern interpretation of a classic, but it also comes in different engine flavors. The first is a 450Hp 6.2-litre LT-1 V8, a 900hp option, and a LS6/X 454 1500HP wet your pants version.

‘What if….’ This seems to be the starting point for most artists to interpret past, present, and future muscle cars.
Since day one of the automobile, artists have pondered what alternative versions of a car may look like. Either reimagining old classics, redesigning present vehicles or possible designs for the future. Below we will take a look at this highly creative subculture with some choice picks.

What’s a Render?

When I think of a muscle car render, I generally think of some sort of CGI/3D creation. But, as the word render essentially means, ‘to represent or depict artistically,’ it can be anything from a simple pencil drawing to a multistage, digital asset. For example, take the wonderfully futuristic Mustang render by Jomar Machado from our header image. A great example of a digital rendering.

Interpretation

No matter if the end result is for the artist to simply flex their creative muscles or design the next new thing, a subjective interpretation is the endgame.

Some draw or paint classic muscle cars to simply sell on as automotive artwork. This is a valid area, as a man cave always looks much better with a few bits of muscle car artwork hanging from the wall. Then there is the rendering of current or future models. In other words, the basic ‘what if..’ mindset.

Below is a truly lifelike 3-D rendering of a Dodge Demon Shooting Brake by Rain Prisk. Basically, what would the Dodge Demon look like in a family-friendly form.

Then there is the interpretation of old classics into outlandish, custom vehicles. Just check out the render below of a Pontiac GTO Judge by Instagram user @adry53customs (Judgemental). Even if you don’t like the design, you can’t help but admire the guy’s artistic skills.

But, what about future models? With Dodge planning to spit out its first EV muscle car in the next few years, everybody’s trying to second guess a possible design. One particularly cool vision of the 2024 Dodge Challenger emuscle car is from Adry53Customs. I’m no muscle car designer, but this interpretation looks very viable. Me wonders if the official Dodge designers take note of these designs. Only time will tell.

It’s all About Creativity

Muscle car renders allow our imaginations to go wild. The constraints of production vehicles don’t apply, and the final design isn’t restricted by wind tunnels or computer readouts. But, for those trying to predict the design of a future model get the most satisfaction if their design comes to fruition, whole or in part.

The current owner of Mo-Par City, Larry Pontnack, has decided at the youthful age of 80 years, 50 of these in the car game, that it’s time to retire. If you have not guessed already, Mo-Par City consists of hundreds of A, B, C, and E-body restorable vintage Mopars, and thousands of spare parts. Everything in the collection is up for sale.

Mo-Par City is located in Oregon, Illinois, on a huge area of business zoned land, which includes 30,000 feet of six storage buildings, with everything from minor parts to engines and transmissions.

Ideally, the business is to be sold in its entirety, but Mr. Pontnack has yet to find an ideal buyer. Therefore, Mo-Par City is still open to selling individual vehicles and parts.

Everyone who owns a car needs to understand the importance of an oil filter. The Car’s oil filter removes harmful debris, metal, and waste from a car’s engine. 2. Then, you need to put a 3/8 extension with your ratchet on the hole of the filter cap.
3. Then you need to twist off.

2. Use of Pliers:

Some people use pliers to remove the oil filter from the engine but sometimes it causes trouble too. Let me explain this as well.

3. Use of Strap wrench:

Now, you may be thinking about how you can use the strap wrench? All you need to do is to place it on the oil filter and turn it around to get the oil filter off. You will need adequate space for this method to work.

4. Use of Vice-grip wrench:

Adjust the size according to your oil filter and then clamp it down. With adequate working space, this is one of the simplest methods of removal.

5. Use of Channellock:

All you need to do is to get the long channel ox. This will help you to get the oil filter off. You have to place it on an oil filter and then turn it around. You can use a screwdriver to get it off.

6. Use of Lubricant:

Use wd-40 lubricant. Put some lubricant in-between the oil filter and the engine block. Wait for 5-10 minutes, then remove the oil filter.

7. Use of Screw Driver:

Locate a screwdriver and use the following steps.

• Push the screwdriver through the oil filter until it pops out the other side. This method can be messy, so catch excess oil drips with some sort of container.
• Now, grab the handle of the screwdriver and twisted it off.

Conclusion:

As much as muscle cars can make hearts race, they are still only as good as their tires.  It’s important for any car owner to keep an eye on their tires and be ready if their tires have something to say.  They can’t talk, but they can still tell you plenty.  

If you love a speedy ride, you’ll want to know what the tires are warning you about. After all, you want your car to be in good condition so that it can own the road. That’s why you like muscle cars.

Cracking the Tire Code

To understand your tires, you’ve got to learn what they should look like and compare that to any changes.  That’s because your tires can tell you if your suspension is out of alignment. They can warn you about steering issues that could cause costly and even deadly mistakes. Your tires can warn you when they are off track and need corrective action.  

Bulges or Tears

If you see either of these problems, there’s a good chance your tire could blow. You’d better get it replaced. 

Wobble, Wobble

A wobbly tire is also about to blow. There’s no time to waste here. It needs to be replaced quickly. Often this feels like a steering problem. If in doubt, have someone drive alongside you and watch for the wobble. They will probably spot it!

Patches

When you see patches, it indicates that your tires should be rotated more regularly.   Be aware that if a tire has gone beyond patchy to bald spots, it needs to be replaced.

Feathered Edges

Your tire may start to have a feathered edge. This is telling you to get a wheel alignment. Either it’s one tire that has angled too far in or out. Or, it could be the whole car that needs realignment. Either way, be glad you were paying attention.

Center Wears Out

If you notice the center of your tire or tires is wearing out faster than the rest, that’s a sign of over-inflation. Check your car manual and make sure your tires match that.  Remember summer and winter inflation amounts may be different.

Sides Wear Out

When both sides of the tire are looking more worn than the center, that indicates that there isn’t enough inflation.  Check the manual and add air accordingly.

Inside-Edge Wear Only

If only the inside edge is showing wear, you need your suspension checked. It is likely to be a problem with the bushings or springs. A wheel alignment is needed at a minimum.

Outer Edge Wear Only

Performance driving can lead to wearing out the outer edge of a tire. It’s that quick cornering.  However, if you notice it, make sure to have your mechanic keep an eye on your suspension and shocks.  Consider getting your tires rotated and balanced.  

Scalloped Wear

Cupping or scalloped wear is a very bad sign. When tires aren’t damped properly, they are taking the brunt force of the car’s weight too often. This may be a problem with the suspension or struts. It could be a bent connection or worn-out shock absorbers. Your car will last longer if this problem is caught and corrected.

Sell Your Car

Sometimes your tires are telling you it’s time to sell your car.  At a certain point, your car’s value drops to the point where it isn’t worth spending the money on good tires. It’s smarter to just trade your car and start over with something new. And hopefully fun!

An Ounce of Prevention

All of these tire warnings should give you a chance to protect your car, your tires, and your safety.  It also pays to have regular wheel alignments and suspension checks, especially if you enjoy performance driving.  

Keep an eye on your tires and pay attention if you notice odd wear patterns. You’ll be the smart one who avoids trouble and still gets to bend the rules of the road.

While we all love muscle cars for their performance, it would be nice if they would catch up to the modern technology on most new cars.  The good news is that more safety systems are being offered by the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, and Dodge Challenger this year.  

What does this mean for a muscle car owner?  Well if you’ve got these systems, you are less likely to get into a situation where a crash occurs. You are less likely to scratch or damage your muscle car.  And, you can protect your insurance rates by staying out of fender benders.  

Should you value your trade or wait another year?  Let’s take a look at the new safeguards offered in the three leading Muscle cars.

2021 Ford Mustang

The Mustang has the most standard features of the three.  The pre-collision assist system includes pedestrian detection and a forward collision warning. It has dynamic brake support to assist the driver. Automatic braking is also part of the system just in case. 

The lane-keep assist is a warning with an automatic straightening capability.  The blind spot monitor has no automatic features, but it lets the driver know if there is a car too close for a safe lane change. This system has a rear cross-traffic warning for safer parking maneuvers.  The Pony car even has rain-sensing wipers and automatic high beams as standards.  

Only adaptive cruise control is left as an option.  This desirable system can regulate speed to match traffic. While a Pony car driver tends to love the open road, they will appreciate having this system when they are in slow-and-go traffic situations.

Ford is clearly calculating that those in search of a new sports car may be persuaded to put the Mustang at the top of the list.  The package of technology would be expensive to purchase separately, and it is competitive with more conventional cars. 

2021 Chevy Camaro

The newest Camaro is the only one to offer the rear camera mirror feature. It can switch between a regular mirror and a digital screen that shows a wide rear image. This optional feature is one of many offered on higher trim levels.  Chevy is offering a blind spot monitor and a forward collision alert as options on lower trim levels.  Other options include the rear cross-traffic alert and a GM-product called the Lane Change Alert, which is a more active system as a backup to the blind spot monitor. 

2021 Dodge Challenger

Like the Camaro, the Challenger doesn’t offer its equipment as standard. It is offering a full-speed forward-collision warning with active braking. There is a blind-spot monitor with the usual cross-traffic warning.  There’s also adaptive cruise control and automatic high beams on the menu.

Final Analysis

Ford clearly has taken the lead on crash avoidance systems, making them all standards. It is surprising given that Chevrolet isn’t even offering automatic braking or adaptive cruise control on the Camaro.  The Challenger slots in between the two, offering more like the Ford but keeping everything options like the Chevrolet.  

All three Muscle cars have rear view cameras and the latest stability controls.  The Camaro and Mustang both have two extra airbags. These are airbags for the driver and front passenger.

While safety isn’t nearly as fun as performance, it’s still good to know that the three famous Muscle cars are being modernized in this way.  Now, if self-driving Muscle cars go on sale, you can count me out.

The elephant in the room for most muscle car fans is a slow onslaught of electric vehicles. If we recognize the fact or not, anybody with a passing interest in muscle car is wondering how the mighty V8 engine will fit into this new world. Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis has recently addressed this issue in an interview with CNBC https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/26/dodge-boss-says-evs-can-save-americas-new-golden-age-of-muscle-cars.html stating, ‘The days of an iron block supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 are numbered.’ But he continues to say, ‘They’re absolutely numbered because of all the compliance costs. But the performance that those vehicles generate is not numbered.’

Mr. Kuniskis continues by turning a negative into a positive showing that the ‘golden age of muscle cars’ can be saved by either all-electric or hybrid vehicles. This he calls ‘Performance 2.0.’ Basically, once the cost of EV technology starts to drop, performance-based vehicles will emerge.

The Current Lineup

The latest comments from Mr. Kuniskis may surprise some, especially when the Dodge Charger and Challenger are still selling in droves. According to Mr. Kuniskis, 50,000 Hellcats have been sold over the last 5 years. This means that we are not going to see any drastic changes over the next few years. However, the discussion point is more about what’s lurking over the horizon.

Most of the thought process comes from looking back at the original golden age of muscle cars from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The original performance muscle cars were popularized by blue-collar types. Eventually, the vehicles succumbed to national regulations, producing what was supposedly more fuel-friendly vehicles. Those fuel-friendly cruisers also changed their body design, which most would argue was a shadow of their former selves.

The same scenario seems to be looming for current muscle cars. In 1972 huge displacement engines got hit on all sides. Safety parameters increased, as with insurance costs and overall standards of emissions. While there were standout examples of muscle cars along the way, it still took a good few decades for those vehicles to hit a sweet spot. Therefore, planning for the future seems to be the wisest move at this point. As Mr. Kuniskis further states, ‘Without that technology, without electrification. This is 1972 right now, this thing is going to end.’

The Way Forward for EV Muscle Cars

Now Fiat Chrysler has become the conglomerate of Stellantis(linking up with French automakers PSA), shared platforms, ideas and technology are sure to emerge.

Dodge doesn’t currently offer any type of electric vehicle, but that is sure to change over the coming years. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares recently said that new vehicles up to 2025 will be offered with an electric equivalent.

Ford to go Electric by 2028

The video above at 4:30 from Autoline Daily shows that Ford and the Mustang may be gearing up to go all-electric. The video prediction is a 2028 timeframe for an all-electric Mustang. But that doesn’t consider the reports of the S650 Mustang which could see the light of day by 2023. Some have said that the life-cycle of the S650 Mustang will clash with a 2028 all-electric Mustang release. This may push the Mustang EV forward to the end of the decade.

Ford has already shown glimmers of what could be in store for the future. The Mustang Lithium Concept was first shown at SEMA 2019, along with the Mustang Mach-E 1400. However, at this stage of the game, these designs are almost sealed units, without the ability to tune up as per the regular upgrades. It’s not like you can quickly add a new supercharger or strap on a turbo.

There is also talk of Ford releasing a 415cu/6.8L pushrod V8 into the Mustang. If this is true, the internal combustion engine still has many years ahead. The Coyote, Predator, and Voodoo V8 engines still have plenty of life left in them.

General Motors EV’s

At this point, it’s anybody’s guess if the 6th generation Chevrolet Camaro or further will turn electric or not. The next few years will see downtime for the sprightly pony car. However, the current Camaro’s home base of Lansing Grand River, which also makes the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 could be the center point. It would be no surprise if the Camaro emerges as a hybrid or full electric vehicle.

Conclusion

It’s clear at this stage that all the muscle car manufacturers are beavering away in the background working out how to take the best elements of a V8. The tricky balancing act of pushing the technology, while also respecting the past will be interesting to see emerge.

It’s likely that the introduction of a full-blown electric muscle car will be done in tentative steps. Gauging user feedback, with hopefully the ability to tune the engine. How the side benefits of the V8 engine will be addressed will also be interesting. The low-end rumble, tone, and as the Beachboys put it, good vibrations, will all need consideration.

The writing is clearly on the wall. Electric vehicles are on a slow trudge to take over the world. This may not ultimately affect muscle cars as there will always be a place for the mighty V8. But when it comes to high-powered engine swap, electric alternatives are now trickling in, as discussed over a digitaltrends.com with a possible viable options for the traditional LS engine swap.

The initial argument for going down the electric route is simply reliability. According to the article, the basic premise is why have an engine with hundreds of moving parts with loads of icky liquids running through it, when you can have an engine with one single moving part. The traditional LS swap may provide all the power you need, but for every horsepower gained, the engine becomes ever more temperamental.

Electric GT are the guys behind the test engine in question, which provides not just the V8 lookalike e-Crate Motor, but also also all the other bits and battery cells to run the thing.

Checking out the company’s website, they have complete crate motor power plants, for instance the GTE-240 with 240 horses. While they also offer many other separate parts, such as battery management systems, motors, cooling systems and complete electrical hookup systems. All the systems available can be hooked up to a regular transmission and for anything from small roadsters to a large sized SUV.

If this particular way of thinking has already tickled your fancy, you may be already wondering about the initial costs. For a complete system dropped into your favorite vehicle, prices are on average are $59,999. One example build on their website is for a 1967 to 1969 Camaro or Pontiac Firebird conversion, which will deliver 240hp with 350lb/ft of torque, which they say feels more like 400hp in a traditional V8.

As for the looks of the engine, it certainly has the outer appearance of a traditional V8. Just with smaller dimensions and none of the usual wires, hoses and usual engine paraphernalia.

The initial costs will be the biggest downside to many. But we can see that it’s only a matter of time before these type of retrofits drop considerably in price. Especially when demand starts to increase and the cost of parts drop accordingly.

Which means that if you have the cash to splash, the current offerings from Electric GT could be a viable way to electrify a vintage muscle car. But for everybody else, even a Chevrolet Performance DR525 LS 6.2L drag racing crate engine that produces 525hp with all the bits needed, is still far cheaper, with plenty of money left over for when things do go wrong. Plus, a traditional engine has a built-in soundtrack, visceral feel and smells that are equally as important.

Electric engines are well on their way and there’s no denying their instant torque capabilities. But I think we have quite a few years before they become the de facto standard.

Dodge have just spat out the official pricing for the 2020 Challenger SRT Super Stock and it comes in at an impressive $81,090 in exchange for its 807 Horsepower. In comparison, the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye comes in at $78,090 with destination fee and $2,100 gas guzzler tax and the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon which was sold for $84,995 before any upfront fees.

This is not a vast amount of money considering it’s the fastest production car for the price. As for the overall stats, the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 and 2.7-liter supercharger launches from 0-60 mph in 3.25 seconds and can do a quarter-mile in 10.50 seconds at 131 mph. The power runs through an eight speed automatic transmission to 3.09 gears, with a rev. limit of 6,400 rpm. Coupled to the ground with 18×11-inch aluminum wheels and Nitto NT05R 315/40R18 drag radials.

Orders for the Superstock will start at the end of August 2020, with production, starting at the Brampton Assembly Plant this fall.

To qualify as a “collectible car” insurance companies generally require that the vehicle not be your primary vehicle. This means that you don’t drive it to work or for everyday errands. Instead, you use should be limited to pleasure driving for hobbies like participating in a parade or going to an auto show.

There’s usually also an annual mileage restriction. This is often 7,500 miles per year, but it depends on the state where you live.

The insurance company may also require that you’re at least 25 years old, have at least 5 to 10 years of driving experience, and have a good driving record. You may also need to agree to keep the vehicle in a fully enclosed, secure space like a garage or storage unit. Some companies will also require you to agree not to race the car or drive it on a track.

If the company determines that the vehicle isn’t in good condition, has been used off-road, or has suffered previous damage, then they may also refuse to cover it.

Once you’ve confirmed that you’re eligible, you’ll need to decide on your policy options. Standard policies include coverage for collision, liability, comprehensive, medical payments, and uninsured/underinsured motorists.

Other optional coverage includes:

• Traveling coverage – if your car breaks down, this coverage can reimburse you for your rental vehicle, lodging, food, costs, and more
• Roadside assistance – towing with a flatbed truck only to and from repair shops (avoids unnecessary wear and tear)

Wheels and tires of a muscle car have utmost importance when it comes to smooth driving. No matter how pretty the rest of your ride is, if you don’t have the wheels and tires down to perfection you won’t be satisfied. Just as the wheels and tires for a muscle car must never be compromised, another important aspect, namely WHEEL OFFSET, must also be taken into deep consideration.

What is wheel offset of a muscle car?

This term refers to the measurement in millimeters from the center line of the wheel to the hub-mounting surface. Actually, there are two imaginary vertical planes: one lined with the wheel’s vertical center and the other flushed with the wheel’s mounting surface. The distance between these two planes is called wheel offset. It has nothing to do with the horizontal center, called the center cap, of your muscle car.

What is the importance of wheel offset of your muscle car?

It is always essential to buy a wheel with the correct offset for your muscle car. If you have a bad wheel offset, the suspension, the steering and the handling of your beautiful muscle car will be badly affected. Besides, wheel width also affects the offset parameters and can degrade the function of brake calipers and steering components.

There are three possibilities when it comes to wheel offset:

• Zero Offset

Here the hub-mounting surface is even with the wheel’s center line and there is no distance between the two imaginary planes.

• Positive Offset  

Here the hub-mounting line is toward the outside of the center line. The hub mounting surface on your muscle car’s wheel is towards the front or face of the wheel. It means that the imaginary plane through the wheel’s vertical center is behind the surface mounting plane. Front wheel drive muscle cars generally have positive offset wheels. Nowadays, new rear wheel drive muscle cars are also coming fitted with positive offset wheels. This is the standard for most original rims.

• Negative Offset  

Here the hub-mounting surface is toward the inside or the back or the brake side of the wheel’s center line. This clearly means the imaginary plane through the wheel’s vertical center is in front of the mounting surface plane.

To achieve a universal fit, most aftermarket rims run a negative offset since this does not degrade brake calipers or steering mechanisms. Negative offset does have some negative repercussions. It increases the stress on wheel bearings. Also, the load on bearings is intensified with aggressive tires and added lift.

How to measure the wheel offset of your muscle car?

 This involves a two-step mechanism. First, you will have to find your wheel’s center line. This can be done very easily if there is no tire on the rim, which is not possible normally. So, you will measure the width of your wheel either by measuring from the inner tire bead to the opposite inner tire bead or by measuring from one outer flange to the other. Divide the measurement by two and you get your wheel’s center line.

The second step to determine your muscle car wheel offset needs marking the center line of your wheel and drawing a line to measure from. This you can do easily with a piece of tape, a string and a paperclip. First of all tape the string to your center line, then tie the paper clip to the end of the string and finally stand your wheel up. After all this setting, you will measure the distance between the mounting surface and the paper clip. The answer is your wheel offset. You can measure it accurately if you keep the paperclip perpendicular to the wheel’s mounting surface.

What is the role of wheel offset in choosing the right wheel and right tires for your muscle car?

 The life of your wheels and tires depends on the correct wheel offset, as its being right will produce no bad effect on your muscle car’s steering, suspension, handling or scrub radius. Correctly measured offset ensures that the wheels fit and clear all the components of the suspension and the inner wheel accurately.

Choosing the Right Wheels

All of this makes it crucial that you select the right OEM or aftermarket wheels and tires for your muscle car. Even the aftermarket truck wheels for your ride must be selected with the right parameters.

Both wheel offset and backspacing should be taken into consideration. Backspacing is measured in inches. More backspacing pulls the wheels in closer to the brakes and suspension, while less backspacing does the opposite. When you buy aftermarket wheels, it is unlikely that you will have the same offset and backspacing as the factory originals. This is because most drivers change wheels and tires to get added performance and look for wider and taller tires, thus affecting the geometry of the entire system.

For correct fitment for your aftermarket wheels, the important measurements to consider are wheel diameter, width, lug pattern and backspacing. While measuring offset precisely is difficult to do, backspacing measurements can be done with a straight edge and tape measure. The measurement is taken from the mounting surface to the wheel’s outermost edge.

This stunning specimen is one of the most coveted Corvettes ever built. Chevy only made 20 of these in 1967 and this was the only one with a red-on-red color scheme.

Just before the eve of the 2019 Sema Show, Chevrolet have released a rather spiffing 2020 COPO Camaro to celebrate 16-times NHRA champion John Force. The car will be later auctioned at Barrett Jackson, Scottsdale in January, with the money raised going to DonorsChoose.org.

This one-off special vehicle is not part of the limited 69 drag racers built by Chevrolet for 2020, but in addition to. Which means this year’s total will come to 70 COPOs.

As for the special features of this car, starting with the powertrain which will be a 350 cubic-inch LSX V8 with a 2.65L Magnusson supercharger. The vehicle also feature a track-ready Racer’s package, with all the racing goodies you would expect, such as carbon fiber air inlet and the usual parachute.

The red and black color scheme follows to the interior, with a John Force’s autograph on the dash. There’s also the option of being able to personalize the Camaro with a range of colors. these include – Hugger Orange, Butternut Yellow, Frost Green Poly, Olympic Gold Poly, Garnet Red, Fathom Green Poly and Azure Turquoise Poly. If you wanted to opt. for more standard colors, the range covers Black, Summit White, Satin Steel Gray and Red.

Most of the time, our muscle cars have sentimental value.

So you know you want a muscle car and you want to go fast, too. What are the fastest muscle cars on the market?

There’s more than one reason to buy a muscle car, and they’re not all about speed.

There’s have all-American good looks and oodles of torquiness.  A throaty roar down the stretch and the chance to own a piece of classic American auto history.

First, some parameters. Are we talking 0-60, or flat out top speed? For our purposes here, we’ve combined the two.

So here they are in reverse order, the five fastest muscle cars for those who want to go fast. Take your pick.

Cadillac CTS-V

Cadillac calls it the most powerful Cadillac ever built. With a claimed top speed of 200 mph, and the 640 hp supercharged V8 engine pushing 630 pounds of torque, who’s to argue?

Possibly, it may be those who see Cadillac’s fabled luxury as no place for a muscle car. Except this one’s built to go and that changes everything. We’d have placed it higher up the list, but a sluggish 3.7-second 0-60 performance didn’t do it any favors.

2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Powered by a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 650 hp with an official 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, the ZL1 is designed to excel.

At Germany’s 7.6-mile oval Papenburg track it broke the 200 mph barrier. It was clocked at a startling 202.3 mph and staked a claim to the title of world’s fastest muscle car. Marking 193.3 mph on the return, the result was an official top speed average of 198 mph.

Equus Bass 770

Equus retains the muscled motoring of American classics and couples it with the modern era’s refined technology with notes of ultra-cool luxuriousness.

The result is 6.2 liters of a supercharged engine that waves sixty goodbye in a mere 3.4 seconds. Breaking out at a top speed of 200 mph, so says Equus, the 770 lights up the roadway like a pack of quality H4 bulbs.

2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye

The Redeye is right there with the quickest street cars on the market.

If your thirst for speed isn’t quenched by the Hellcat’s zip to sixty in 3.4 seconds, the quarter-mile at 11.4, or flat out speeds that have seen 203 mph in the rear-view, you’re dryer than Dodge knows what to do with.

Except maybe for the Hellcat Charger. Is this the fastest American muscle car ever made?

In 2015, Dodge named it the fastest family sedan on the planet. Hellcat doesn’t sound like it was named with the kids in mind and at 206 miles an hour with the wind behind, it doesn’t behave like it.

Using back to back runs, Dodge marked the official average at 204.55 mph and pointed out that their tested model were no different from what you’d buy in the store. Except for the tires.

The Fastest Muscle Cars of All Time

So there they are, the five fastest muscle cars, all built with speed in mind.

And whether you’re talking about how quickly they hit sixty, knock out the quarter-mile mark, or their rubber-burning, throat-spurting, road-blazing flat out speeds down the tarmac, it makes almost no difference. Each one is ridiculously quick.

Which one is the fastest? Who really knows. It’s the never-ending debate in bars, clubs, and magazine reviews across America. Long may it continue.

Wind the clock back to 1969 and you’ll find Dodge needed a racer to produce the goods at NASCAR. In conjunction with Creative Industries, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was born, named after Daytona Beach, Florida. Intended as a limited of the Dodge Charger, with an unusual nosecone and huge rear wing, the Daytona definitely produced the goods on the track, hitting 200 mph at Talladega in 1970, the first time ever and plenty of wins. So good, NASCAR decided to ban the things after one season.

To celebrate the Winged Warrior’s 50th anniversary a 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary limited edition model is to be produced. This model won’t just have the now standard wide-body, but also tweaks throughout from the powertrain to the styling. Power is pumped out by a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, 717 horsepower (534 kilowatts) and 650 pound-feet of torque. Brakes-wise, there will be six-piston Brembos at the front and four-piston versions at the rear, on top of 20 inch Warp Speed wheels finished in satin carbon.

No huge rear wing on this model, only a small spoiler. But, there will be Daytona decals on the rear quarter and decklid with four colors available – Pitch Black, Triple Nickel, White Knuckle, and B5 Blue. The White models will receive blue Daytona decals, while the other colors receive white Daytona decals.

For the interior there will be Daytona blue cross-stitched performance seats, temperature controlled with Nappa leather and Alcantara. A flat bottomed, suede steering wheel, velour-bound Daytona floor mats, dynamica suede headliner, special carbon fiber bezels and instrument panel. Blue accent stitching will also follow through the interior.

The model will be limited to 501 units, the same number needed to be produced back in the day to allow qualification in NASCAR( in reality supposedly 503 1969 Charger Daytonas were built for the US and 40 for Canada), a numbered plaque will also adorn each vehicle. On that note, the original Daytonas didn’t exactly sell well due to their unusual looks, but now command a king’s ransom if you’re lucky enough to own one, especially as a 426ci. Hemi model.

There’s no pricing information at this point, but orders will start this fall, with deliveries starting in early 2020.

Oldies, but goodies
The irony of the current Charger platform, along with the Challenger, is that it’s one of the oldest vehicles currently on sale. A platform change is due in a couple of years, but it seems the public have not tired of what is still a worthy vehicle. The underpinnings may change in the future, but the retro styling is one of the pointers to the success of the modern muscle car and why change what clearly works.

An article over at Motor1 states that the average Dodge buyer is 51 years old, a group most likely to reminisce about the golden age of muscle cars, also have the most disposable income. As a byproduct of the buoyant sales, it has also cemented the concept that basic muscle car principles still work today. In other words, huge horsepower in an affordable saloon car never grows old.

This means that the future Dodge Charger and Challenger will feature underpinnings to satisfy modern safety regulations and advancements, but that outer shell will only be slightly tweaked for the coming decade.

Last year at SEMA, Chevrolet unveiled a unique vehicle in the form of a Camaro Electric dragster, the eCOPO. A testbed and proof of concept for a drag racer which could perform a quarter-mile in 9.51 seconds at 140mph. Now the vehicle is coming up for auction at Russo and Steele during Monterey Car Week.

The vehicle is sure to attract attention, even if it’s on the basis of its just a one-off build and can apparently pop a wheelie on command. The other interesting bit to note is that Chevrolet don’t directly own the vehicle, but rather Hancock and Lane Racing, who developed the car.

In any case, the stats. of this ECOPO are interesting. The car produces the equivalent power of 700 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque, through two motors and four 200-volt batteries, placed around the car for better weight distribution. One batteries is located where the rear seats should be, another over the rear axle and the last one in place of the spare tire. In all other departments the Camaro is pretty much standard along with the Turbo 400 transmission.

The car also has some unique additions, such as the hood graphics, eCOPO badging and support and training thrown into the mix.

The development of the car was apparently as a test for a possible publicly available electric crate motor. Thus, all the other standard equipment throughout the vehicle. If this crate motor ever sees the light of day, is another question. An interesting proposition if we are given the eventual option of an LS swap or an electric version.

As for possible prices, a used 2019 COPO Camaro can go for around $150,000, but some estimates have said the car is possibly worth up to $425,000 to $525,000 on a good day.

A One-off and test vehicle this Camaro may be, but it also brings up much debate as to the future of the mighty V8 and for muscle cars in general. Electric power is slowly seeping its way into not just roadgoing vehicles, but also sports. Not the happiest of news for petrol heads, but as discussed many times, if the wave of electric is coming, it’s better to be ahead of the pack, than left behind.

This means that this Camaro gives us a glimpse of what future muscle and pony cars could be. Think of it this way – if we were all given the assignment of taking the best bits and the essence of what makes a muscle car great and produce an electric version, what would we come up with? Would we facepalm the idea as sacrilege or see what’s possible? Both views are legitimate, but I’d rather see a world with a world-class electric muscle car, than see it being resigned to the history books as a breed.

The all-new mid-engined 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 has finally been revealed. Lots of hype, lots of controversy, but now a chance for everyone to form their own opinions on if the latest ‘Vette is a worthy successor. Why the initial polarized views? Mainly due to the ‘Vette being front engined for the last 66 years. Now, the engine is placed behind the passenger compartment.

Stylistic changes have also come in, like the long hood and sweeping fenders being replaced by a ‘cab forward’ design with a shorter and flatter front nose. A tapered hatch now opens up a small trunk where the engine now sits, which also has influenced the overall design of the car. In essence, sports car now turns supercar.

As you can see in the video below, the big reveal happened yesterday showing the first glimpses of the preproduction model.

Questions……

The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette C8 threw up many questions before release – why change a format that has clearly worked for years? Why change a winning formula when the C7 was so good?

The chief engineering bods over at Chevrolet said they had reached the performance limits of a front engined car. With a mid-engined platform the weight distribution and balance is now more like a race car. Also, in a bid to constantly outperform sports sedans and the ever-growing power of modern muscle cars. The other take is to match up and beat European sports and supercars at their own game. A super car ‘Vette…, that is a new paradigms.

Recent sales have been a factor, with only a smidge under 10,000 being sold in June, but the ‘Vette is a halo car and has always sold in smaller numbers. With a possible starting price of under $60,000, a touch more than the current base price of $55,900, the new price shouldn’t take much convincing for existing Corvette fans. For the extra cash outlay there’s also more zest for your money with an optional ZR1 performance package that will do 0-60mph in under three seconds. A 6.2-liter/376cu. V8 with 490hp(365 kW) should also be the base offering.

Other changes in the C8 will be the addition of two trunks. Apparently large enough to throw in an ‘airline-spec carry-on bag and a laptop computer case’ in the front and a few sets of golf clubs in the back. Engineering wise, the engine can go from eight to four cylinders for fuel saving and be in the ballpark of 30mpg on the freeway. A custom-designed fast-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, will also be installed along with versions being in right-hand-drive for international markets. The last point being a major move, as it’s clearly to take on the European markets just as nicely as the Mustang GT has done over the past few years.

As for high-performance versions or electrics, they should be on their way, but no exact specifications as yet.

If you check out the promo video below, you’ll see that a mid-engined Corvette is not a new idea. Zora Arkus-Duntov, the big daddy originator of the Corvette always had the idea of a mid engined version, but it never got past the concept stage. It’s only now that the idea has come to fruition. The C8 will be larger than its predecessor and also be the first Corvette since the C1 to only offer an automatic transmission when released.

Which brings us to the question of who will be the direct competitors for the new mid-engined Corvette C8? Aiming at a younger buyer market and now with more high end performance vehicles in its sights, the C8 will likely go up against the likes of the Audi R8, Jaguar F-Type R, Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche 911 Carrera S for starters. The base model C8 will have the largest size engine as a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 with 490HP. The Audi R8 has 562HP and the Jag. 550HP, but their base models cost $171,150 and $102,825, compared to the C8 at $60,000. A significant price saving.

The C8 should will be able to accelerate the fastest compared to the Audi at 3.4 seconds and the Jag. at 3.9 seconds. The C8 will also have options like the Z51 Performance Package, which should up the anti for cranking out the most performance for your money. Higher end C8 models could also be eyeing up suspects like the Ferrari F8 Tributo or McLaren 720S.

This is clearly a very bold move by Chevrolet. It’s still a Corvette, looks like a Corvette, but now with more European sensibilities. It’s still all American sports car at heart, especially with old school pushrods and a V8 to provide the power. An eye on the past, while pushing the platform forward for the next decade.

Since the Dodge Challenger got its wide-body version in 2018, the Charger has felt a little bit left out. The Challenger SRT Demon didn’t help in the envy stakes, with its widebody looks showing how current muscle cars should stand out with their beefy looks. Now, Charger fans have the same widebodied option available early 2020.

So, what do you get with this new version? Wider fenders mean an extra 3.5 inches added to the width of the car, which also means fatter and grippier treads can be fitted in the form of huge 20×11 in. wheels with 305/35 Pirellis tires. This also translates to faster times. 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds, a quarter-mile in an ET of 10.96 seconds, a top speed of 196 mph and 2.1 seconds faster round a 2.1-mile road track…. and of course it looks so much cooler.

The Hellcat will have the same 6.2-liter supercharged V8 with 707HP, with stopping power via 6-piston calipers and 15.4-inch rotor Brembo brakes, the same as with the Charger Scat Pack Widebody conversion. What has been changed is the suspension setup amongst other things. The Hellcat will feature Bilstein adaptive dampers, a stiffer suspension setup with larger sway bars and extra driving modes. Launch control and line lock will come in both models optimizing launches and producing more tasty burnouts. There’s even been some tweaks to the interior with accent stitching, upgraded trim materials and a slightly redesigned instrument cluster. Prices yet to be announced.

Initial impressions
Wider body, better suspension, better wheels and tires, a few interior goodies. Power is the same, but this wide-body version should be able to throw things down more efficiently. Essentially, a more optimized and quicker Charger. But, this wide-body version now looks like how the Charger should have been from the start. It’s a muscle car, it should look beefy and this wide-body version just adds that little something that rounds off the final design, especially in a Hellcat.

It’s unlikely that Dodge would make the wide-body a standard feature, as those who paid extra for these features wouldn’t be exactly happy. However, widebodies should be the way to go. They just look so much cooler. Angrier, beefier and dare I say it, more sports car like, which translates to a wider appeal. No bad thing when most carmakers are bricking themselves thinking everybody is going to be driving electric tin box SUVs in 10 years.

These midcycle enhancements should keep all Mopar fans happy until both the Charger and the Challenger get a complete design refresh in the next few years. Initially, it was thought that the new design would be based on the Alfa Romeo or Maserati platform, but reports point to a complete upgrade to the latest platform……hopefully with widebody, please.

The upcoming Corvette C8 has definitely raised eyebrows, not just for ‘Vette fans, but also for American sports cars, super cars and even muscle car fans. Why….it’s going to mid-engined to join the supercar club, a new platorm for ‘Vette fans and it’s going to bring more of the spotlight to American vehicles, which hopefully should trickle down to muscle cars and the like.

The release of the new ‘Vette is likely to be July 18 2019 at a special event in California, according to recent reports. GM have increase their workforce with 400 jobs at their Bowling Green Assembly Plant, Kentucky to hit the release date. Plus, orders are already being taken, already pulling interest away from the current and most amazing ‘Vette yet, the C7.(more on that later….)

I spy..
So, with more predictions online about the upcoming C8 than a Medieval soothsayer’s diaries, we have the following certain maybes.
The base powertrain could be a version of the Corvette’s 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine with 500HP. Other powertrain variants may follow like a 1,000HP hybrid. Designwise, everything has been shaken up to be very supercar-like with reports saying the exterior looks very Ferrari-like.

All sightings have been up to now of camo. versions, but at least it gives a small indication the final design which looks to also have heaps of C7 influence. Just check out the video clip below.

Power levels
A predicted thousand horsepower hybrid, 8 speed dual clutch transmission and a base model with 500 horses, with a possible middle version producing 800HP. Autoweek have put together some great info-graphics of predicted power to weight for a range of supercars and possibly where the C8 will fit in. The same goes for their other graphic below which shows the dollars per HP value.

The 1,000Hp hybrid C8 beats out the Ferrari 488 Pista and McLaren 720S. While the base version C8 stacks up against the Aston Martin DB11 and Acura NSX. If pricing is correctly predicted, then the new C8 sits on top for value dollars per HP, just like a the rest of the muscle car pack.

We all want the latest, most shiny things and this has proven to be the same with the C8. The general consensus is that C7 sales have slowed as many people are waiting to buy the C8, rather than the current C7. Even though the C7 ‘Vette is said to not just be the best version ever, it’s also an amazing car in its own right. Even so, having a ‘supercar’ badge rather than top end sports car, will always be the preference. Superman just wouldn’t be the same if he was just called ‘Man.’ ‘Super’ just has a special significance for us all.

‘Vette sales fell around 12 percent in the first quarter of 2019 from 4,457 units than the previous year to 3,943 units this year.
Chevy are even offering $3,000 off any 2019 Corvette model in May 2019 to current Corvette owners or 0% APR on certain models. This is a rare offering by the company, but a definite indication that the C7 is still the center of attention.

According to a Bloomberg article, one Corvette dealer says they have been taking deposits for the C8 Corvette since 2014. ‘People are canceling their orders (on 2019s) and starting to hold back, because they want to wait and see what’s going to come out, ‘ said Sean McCann, floor manager at Stingray Chevrolet near Tampa, Fla.

Win one…
If you want to try and win a 2020 mid engine Corvette C8, then the National Corvette Museum have secured themselves a build slot for one of the C8 cars. The raffle will take place in August with tickets costing $250 each, but there are only 1,500 tickets available.

Trickle-down effect
The C8 Corvette is a Halo car, meaning that its light will shine over the rest of the range. The hope is to attract younger buyers, but also a ligit supercar fom Chevy means focus may also turn to other American vehicles and even the muscle car clan. Basically, those who look at the C8 may also take a passing interest in other American vehicles. ‘Hmmm, whats that Hellcat thing or that GT500…?’ Even if it’s just a passing glance, it’s at least raising awareness that these vehicles exist and provide not just a thrilling ride, but also some of the best HP per dollar value.

So the C8 maybe going up in status, but hopefully it will bring the rest of the league with it. At the least from an awareness point of view, even if it is to just find out about long-standing, carmaker rivalry.

If you have or planning to own a 70-72 Chevelle I have great news for you. These model years remain the most collectible cars to date for all muscle cars.

Car Tech Books has a fantastic book out right now. It’s written by Dale McIntosh and Rick Nelson. Dale is very well known in the Chevelle world and has quite a following. With a web site and other handy materials from Mr. McIntosh, you the end user, can perform a great restoration. Rick Nelson on the other hand, is the owner of his own restoration business. He specializes within the Chevrolet family. If you combine the two of them together you have all you need to do your 70 to 72 Chevelle project. The book itself is two hundred and forty pages of detail. Over five hundred and fifty pictures along with charts and graphs. No stone goes unturned here. Nine solid chapters in an easy to read format.

The book goes into great detail regarding all aspects of your project. From items as small as a fuse, to the rings on the pistons. There is no detail too small or insignificant in this manual. And as important as that, what procedures and tools to use.

The two authors offer this book for the Chevelle purists. The purist who wants the very best. With any restoration there are hundreds of questions and problems. This book is a great example of how to do it right. It’s a “How to“ manual in the purist sense. For example, Chapter Four delves into great detail about how to rebuild your brakes. From bending your brakes lines to the correct OEM brake shoes and hardware. Nothing is left to chance. Clear, precise data is found in the pages of this wonderful book.

I also liked the in-depth detail about where your car was built, how many where built, and with what options. You will read and see for yourself how your Chevelle was built from day one.

There is not a weak link in this book. This book is clearly heads and shoulders the best for a Concurs d’ elegance level restoration. It’s that detailed. If you want the best, if you want it done correctly, if you want a perfect car, then this book is for you.

Let’s be honest about some collector cars. It’s painful to see a great classic that someone cuts corners on. Whether its workmanship, or off brand parts, most of us cringe at the thought. Doing it wrong is a costly error. This book will make sure everything goes as planned. If you are buying your classic Chevelle, or if you already own one I encourage you to buy this book. This book is straight forward, clear and precise. It’s better than a good read. It’s a necessary read.

Has anyone out there ever drifted a four leaf clover before? Me neither. However, with the right ingredients of drifting talent Vaughn Gittin Jr. and a 900HP Ford Mustang RTR, it might just be possible.

For the drift challenge to succeed, a Cloverleaf intersection was closed down in Lake Worth, TX during the nighttime hours and then it’s over to Mr. Gittin Jr. to best describe the experience. ‘Drifting a cloverleaf is something I dream about every time I’m on a plane! I always wondered if I could connect an entire one in drift. It was sketchy, but I pulled it off!!! Damn I love driving Mustangs!’

The video gives the full footage of the challenge, with a nice bit at the end of Mr. Gittin Jr. thanking local law enforcement for their involvement and time. Great to see some of the behind the scenes personnel who are vital to make a project like this one work in reality.

Some of the comments to the video are revealing with one person saying people in the area of the challenge thought this may be the new 2020 GT500 to somebody who lives just five minutes from the intersection writing they could hear the sound from the house. idea what was happening, ‘is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s a four leaf clover.’

These type of challenges are even more impressive when you think about all the work that goes into the setup and execution. We just see the icing on the cake with the footage, but it’s really a team effort from Ford Performance to local law enforcement to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Don’t try this stunt at home kids, unless you’ve got the same sort of authority permission, Lake worth Police, Fire and Naval support, a film crew, Ford Performance on your side and a lifetime of professional drifting experience.

The Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro have been scrapping it out for the title of ‘who’s the best pony car’ since BC times or ‘before carburettors,'(sorry, couldn’t resist). Both vehicles have seen the automotive landscape change many times over the years, but they both still have a basic formula that simply works in the American V8. But what do the Europeans think of these two vehicles, especially when the rivalry and history of both cars doesn’t really count as much over there.

The Ford Mustang GT is widely available in all European countries and even comes with the steering wheel on the other side. The Camaro on the other hand is only available in certain markets.

In this video FifthGear and motoring Svengali Tiff Needell gives an overview of a 2018 Mustang GT with a 5 litre V8 engine putting out 450HP and 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds. The Chevy Camaro has a 6 litre V8 with 453HP and a 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds. The idea here is to see which will suit European roads and drivers the best.

Both vehicles are now imported into the UK with full manufacturing warranty, meaning that they are a viable choice against the likes of the Porsche 911 Carrara. However, as mentioned at the beginning of the video, both the Mustang and Camaro still carry the historical baggage of being optimised for straight lines and don’t have the suspension setup for the more winding roads of Europe. Therefore, in many ways this video isn’t just a side-by-side comparison, but dispelling some of the myths associated with modern pony/muscle cars. Basically, why the test is performed around a track and a short slalom course.

The Mustang GT has the optional adaptive suspension, while the Camaro sticks to its basic setup in the video. Both vehicles ‘handle surprisingly well’ and are ‘fast, sexy, good-to-drive vehicles with not much white space between them.’ The other good news is just like stateside, you get a lot of horsepower for your money. The Mustang GT comes in at £42,000($54,680) and the Camaro at £39,000($50,774), which for the same amount of power in a BMW M4 would cost you £20,000 more. Power, performance and value for money…..

There’s never been a clear winner for which is the best pony car, which is one of the reasons why the comparisons and rivalry will probably go on forever. The good news is that the Europeans now have American V8s as viable, affordable alternatives to the rest of the performance car lineup and not just as one of those ‘imports’ with the steering wheel on the wrong side. It’s definitely working as the Mustang has outsold the Porsche 911 in Germany. Doubly impressive if you think about it as the vehicles will be judged on current worth, rather than nostalgia and back history.

Clearly, the Redeye is a fine beast of a vehicle, it’s just if this example agrees with you for its color and if you really want to pay extra for those options. However, just like muscle cars of old all those options may just prove to be the ones that hike up its value in the long run.

Today’s roads are mostly clogged with mid-size SUV’s and compacts. Ev’s (sorry for cussing..) are talked about as the way of things to come, but just like a classic rock band, muscle and pony cars are as popular as ever and show no sign of going away. On paper, they shouldn’t be with huge V8 engines, but the whole point of the breed is that raw power and style never goes out of fashion.

Other vehicles on the road may give more practicality, but when it comes to performance for the money and always putting a smile on your face with the raw, unadulterated power, you can’t beat a good old muscle car. The heavyweight makes and models which are still flying the flag include the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger.

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was one of the most hotly anticipated muscle cars of recent years, with an absolutely bonkers 6.2-liter V8 808 hp engine. The model was limited to just 3,300 examples.

Those who missed out can now look forward to the equally impressive 2019 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye with 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque, which takes many of the desirable features of the Demon. The Dodge Hellcat itself has proved to be a winning formula, being arguably the most powerful modern muscle car and even being put into the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk with 707 hp.

Not to be outdone, GM have the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z06/Camaro ZL1 with 650 hp, Ford with the 2018 Ford Mustang Bullitt, 2018 Shelby Super Snake (800hp), 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, a GT500 coming very soon. Evo.co.uk said about the Supersnake ‘Let’s be clear – 800bhp in a muscle car is an extremely silly idea.’ The reply would be, Yep, that’s the idea…’ Being conservative is not the way of things in the muscle car world.

Independent builders such as EQUUS have the Bass 770, and now the 2018 Throwback based around a Corvette, with a ridiculous 1000hp and 822 lb-torque.

The muscle car market may just be a tiny sliver of the whole automotive world, but it is a unapologetic brash and loud, raw fun breed of vehicle which will always give the most fun and even value for money when it comes down to dollars per horsepower. 2018 saw some standout muscle cars, which prove the fact that when it comes to high performance this breed still stands its ground. What’s not to like.

Restore a Muscle Car from Lincoln, Nebraska specialize in muscle car restorations taking old vehicles and bringing them back to life. They now have such a large inventory that they have to slim down a little, meaning many of their unrestored examples are now up for sale, sold as seen.

If you didn’t know already, TransAm Depot are the guys who make modern interpretations of the Pontiac Trans Am from either Gen 5 or 6 Camaros. These cars are not simply peripheral design tweaks, the donor vehicles are stripped back to the bone and built up to produce in some cases 1,000-horsepower monsters.

At this week’s New York Auto Show they are unveiling a recent build where they have got together with Swedish designers Zolland Design to produce this magnificent white modern day Pontiac Trans Am 455 Super Duty with 1,000-horsepower at its disposal. The car is based on the Gen 6 Camaro using the Camaro SS 6.2-liter LT1 V8, built up to 7.4 liters/455 cubic inches by Arrington Performance. On top of which sits a Magnuson TVS2300 supercharger with 14 psi of boost. All this producing a rather subtle 1000 HP and 1,046 LB-FT.

If you’re a Pontiac fan and in the market for a modern day muscle car with gobs of power, this could be your option.

The game is being developed as both a VR game and a traditional screen game. Checking out the video you get a first person view working on all the mechanicals of a car, from being on the workbench to being in and around the vehicles. From their website it looks like it’s not just grabbing components, but you can get down as detailed as seeing the welding on the cars. Basically, the game gives you a first person view of all the aspects of rebuilding a car down to the smallest components without getting your hands dirty so to speak.

Their website says they have a growing library of aftermarket parts that can be installed in each vehicle, with more cars being added to the inventory as time goes on. It’s likely that the game will be released this fall, so if you’re interested check out their website link below.

We all get to a certain age when we start to reminisce about how things were so much cheaper in the past. This is exactly the case for muscle cars, proving the point from these images grabbed from Bobby Haddock’s Facebook page, who found some old newspapers in his attic advertising used muscle cars.

One of the images dates from Monday, September 28, 1970, so presumably the others are from around that time period. Wouldn’t it be great if we could pick those cars up for the same price today is the usual response. However, the main takeaway here is looking at the present car market and look for those vehicles which are reasonably priced and could be future rarities. Limited numbers, rare options, barn finds…the list goes on.

This will involve you putting on your treasure hunting hat and constantly checking the listings for vehicles that come up for sale. But like any good treasure hunter, keep looking and eventually you may hit a few nuggets. Finding information on vehicles has never been more accessible online. Muscle car fans spend a lot of time at car shows, just so they can get a glimpse of some of the most amazing high-performance automobiles. These vehicles are known for their powerful engines, high-performance driving and road-racing abilities. Contrary to belief, there are some muscle cars that are still very affordable. 1973 Pontiac GTO
While the company designed its GTO with a 230-horsepower, V-8 engine, it did very little to make it aesthetically pleasing at the time. Only 4,806 Pontiac GTO were produced that year. In fact, many Americans turned their interests to the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler and completely forget about the Torino GT. Today, the Ford Torino GT is valued between $11,950 and $15,900, making it a very affordable muscle car.

1971 AMC Hornet SC/360
The 1971 AMC Hornet SC/360 has a 360-cu.in. V-8 engine. If you read any review from onlinecarparts.co.uk, you will discover that the vehicle is without a doubt one of the most popular amongst the masses. The vehicle was available with a Motorcraft 2100 two-barrel carburetor and 4300 four-barrel on top. Many Americans preferred the latter, because it was capable of producing up to 285-horsepower and 390-lbs.ft. or torque. Today, the 1971 AMC Hornet SC/360 is valued anywhere between $22,800 and $31,400. While this price is a littler steeper than other muscle cars, this is considered affordable in the muscle car market.

1964 Dodge Dart Sport 360
Americans fell in love with the Dodge Dart Sport 360, because it was considered to be “the fastest sedan” of its time. Of course, it had some difficulties keeping up with the Corvette, but it did not have any problems putting the Trans Am to shame. Its 360-cu.in. V-8 engine is capable of producing up to 300 net horsepower. One feature that made the Dodge Dart Sport 360 stand out was the fact that its dual exhaust system was lacking a catalyst. This not only increased its overall horsepower, but it reduced the consumption of gas mileage. Today, the vehicle is valued between $5,200 and $8,500. This is what any muscle car guru would expect to pay for a muscle car in today’s market.

1985 Chevrolet Camaro IROC-Z
As one of Chevrolet’s most popular 80s classics, the Camaro IROC-Z was an immediate hit in America. The car features a 5.0-liter V-8 engine, capable of producing up to 215-horsepower of torque. Hennessey Performance Engineering have been successfully touting their Camaro-based Exorcist as a Dodge Demon killer to good effect, but now it seems they have a package for the Demon itself in the shape of the HPE1000. The car can produce an incredible 1,035HP at the crank and 880 at the wheels, producing a 9.14-second quarter-mile time at 152 mph, quicker than the Demon itself in stock form at 9.65 seconds with 840HP.

To produce the extra power, Hennessey have added to the Demons 6.2-liter supercharged V8 long tube headers, upgraded pulleys, tweaked engine management system, along with Hennessey badging. The company can also give you more power if needed in the form of a HPE1200 package which can give you a whopping 1,500HP along with a roll cage and ‘chute to make sure it complies with NHRA ruling.

The 1st video gives you a quick snapshot of what the upgrade package can do on the dragstrip, showing you the 9.14 sec. time from multiple views. Each view shows you just how brutal this machine sounds, with the end of the video giving you a snapshot of the time slip with some pretty impressive figures.

If you’re interested in one of these upgraded Demons, they will be making only 50 units, which can be ordered via Hennessey directly or through an authorized Hennessey Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership. It makes me think that if the Exorcist is a Dodge Demon killer, then the HPE1000 and HPE1200 must be a Dodge Demon enhancer?? Either way, simply Hennessey will take an already superfast machine and try and make it even faster.

We have featured the Hennessey performance built ‘Exorcist‘ in the past, mainly because of its 1,000HP output and it’s clever marketing of being a Dodge Demon slayer. Personally, the linkage to being able to beat the Dodge Demon is really apples and pears due to the ground up built applications and the Exorcist being a custom-built, while the Demon comes as it is straight from the factory. The Exorcist is probably better round a track, while the Demon is better in a straight line. Both seem to be good, regular roadgoing vehicles as long as you’re happy with the fuel consumption.

Initially you’d think that the Dodge Demon would be harder to acquire, but they’re now popping up for sale on eBay, and this I think is the first time I’ve seen the Exorcist for sale, past being ordered straight from the factory. In any case, the Exorcist is built by a renowned outfit, so the car will hold its price and probably go up in value, along with being a mean performer with the street cred. of having 1,000hp on tap.

The heart of the Exorcist is a Camaro ZL1 with some serious upgrades. The Chevy LT4 V8 engine can produce 1000 bhp at 6,400 rpm and 966 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, with with the help of a supercharger and intercooler system adding 14 psi of boost. The car can also do 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds and a quarter mile in under 10 seconds and a top speed of 217 mph. Apparently only 100 units will be made each model year.

Clearly this is a killer vehicle and you are getting the top end of power and performance, but if you want to do the Dodge Demon comparison, it’s really down to what you’re getting for your money. Dodge Demons have sold out, but seem to be selling on the second-hand market for around $118K – $140K. Less horsepower at 840hp, but better at its own thing and the more thoroughbred muscle car. The Demon has also more hype and awareness, meaning its value will steadily increase over the years. The Exorcist maybe the same, but unlikely at the same extent. The Exorcist is more track focused and with 1,000 horsepower at your disposable will be ridiculous fun.

Therefore, if you want the best of what you can get in the form of a modern Camaro, this is probably the choice. If you want the best in modern muscle car and willing to pay a bit more, then the Dodge Demon maybe the answer.

This 1967 Plymouth GTX Hemi is a simple and straightforward classic which has graced the cover of Muscle Car magazines and for good reason. It’s straightforward classic lines and features have all the elements of what you need from a vintage muscle car. The car is clearly in great shape has the top of the heap muscle car powertrain in a 426ci. Hemi V8 and a four speed manual transmission.

The GTX was originally based on the Belvedere, but had a blacked out grille, racing stripes, simulated hood scoops, tachs. on the dashboard and pop-open fuel filler cap. The optional 426 Hemi engine was good for a 4.8 second 0 to 60 mph time and 13.5 seconds at 105 mph quarter-mile time. Not too shabby, even in 2018.

To have the chance to grace the cover of the muscle car magazine means you have to be in A1 condition which this car seems to be throughout. There doesn’t seem to be any full body shots of the car, but the one supplied are presumably to show how straight and clean the body is along with the interior and engine bay. it’s probably also the reason why the information that comes with the car is short as those who are interested should have an inkling of what they are looking at. Still, knowing a little about its back history, all documentation and other information would have been nice.

This example is one of the straightforward standards of the era and being a Hemi means it has all the grunt and street cred. you could ever need. The 68 to 70 models are arguably more ‘classic’ but the first versions are the start of the breed and worth just as much, even in an historical sense.

When the windshield wipers become ineffective, you’ll need to get them changed right away. This is normally a very simple job and replacement wipers are very inexpensive. Do not hesitate! When the wipers need changed, take a few minutes out of your day to get the job done right away.

This 1968 Plymouth Road Runner has obviously seen better days and it’s going to be a brave person who takes on this project to try and bring it back to life. As you can see it looks like it lost a fight with a snow plough or took a few fatal blows from the Transformer’s Optimus Prime, the impacts are that big. Either way, chassis damage means a complete rebuild or usually scrapping.

The irony is that the listing says it was restored 15 years ago and has some reasonable parts. A non-numbers matching 383ci. V8 engine, A833 transmission, 8.75 rear and 3.55 gears and TTI exhaust / Thorley headers. The car was said to be a daily driver before the accident, but all bets are off after damage like this.

It’s not un-salvageable, but you’re looking at a new chassis and most probably interested parties are going to be seeing this as more of a donor vehicle than anything else. It will be interesting to see if the next owner does have the courage to rebuild this wrecked Road Runner, but in reality this is probably going to end up being a donor vehicle. If you do buy this car to restore it completely, please let us know as we would love to see if a vehicle like this can come back from the brink.

The Ford Fairlane is a no-nonsense brick of a vehicle and in this case, now has a FE427ci. oiler V8 under the hood, originally a “S” code 390 cid V8. It spent most of its time racing, but can be converted back to a streetcar thanks to a bolt in roll cage.

The original 325 HP S code engine was good in itself with 11.6:1 compression, but the replacement 1963 oiler coupled to a C6 transmission is a great thing in itself especially for the asking price. This may be a station wagon with a 318ci. V8 engine, but it has the front end of a Road Runner and loads of potential as a muscle wagon fun car. It originally had a 440 V8, but the 318ci. would be fine for general usage.

The listing says that the interior and exterior does need some work, but by the looks of things you could get away with minimal upgrades to keep this as regular driver. The car mostly looks very straight and clean and the El Paso Sun doesn’t seem to have marred this old beauty that much inside or out. Some of the seats are missing which is an important trip on a wagon, but shopping around for some cheap replacement shouldn’t be that hard.

Overall, this satellite wagon is at a current low price of $1,180.00 and with minimal work could be a great fun ride with loads of potential for upgrades across the board. An equivalent year Road Runner would cost you far more and this in the long run would be far more fun with all the people you can cram in the back. A solid muscle car, which seems great value with loads of potential.

I will not bore you with statistics and all the numbers on this car. It has been written millions of times by now and I cannot add anything to that. What I will add is the beautiful lines of this car. Even the Ford haters will secretly admit that this car is a keeper. So much so that prices on these models are past the orbit we all know.

This 1967 and 68 model have been so popularized by movies and TV shows over the years it’s hard to say nothing but good. Whether you love it from a movie with Steve McQueen or the new Eleanor versions the car spawned the new Mustang back in 2005. That is why I bought my 2005. I did not like the 04 version at all but when Ford reintroduced the Mustang in 05 to look like the 67 and 68 models I was hooked. Ford even offered up a Bullit version back then that was the hunter green.

I came very close to buying that model but settled on a black GT. I have that car to this day and love it. But, I recently bought a 2013 Shelby GT 500 and that Shelby has a bad attitude. It’s fast, hungry, and out right mean. Just like this 67 version. The lines are perfect, the engine and transmission match is perfect and today the older versions are hotter than the sun.

When I go to Vegas I always hit the Shelby museum. It’s a learning experience and you can watch in the shop the guys and gals building the new hot rods right in front of you. You can also see the very first AC Cobra in the lobby along with many other Shelbys for display and for sale. And yes, they represent Mopar’s failed attempt with the Shelby. Now, Raptor Ford trucks that are being built by Shelby. That shows you how popular the brand is today. Saleen is gone and Rousch and Shelby are the players. I love automotive history and looking at this picture once again shows all of us that some great things still are with us many years later.

This past weekend was the Mecum auction just outside of Chicago. For those of you that have never been to a Mecum auction let me tell you about the event.

About a week or so before the actual auction the entire convention center is transformed. Huge tents are put up outside in the parking lots so that all the vehicles can be staged there. I say vehicles because you will see classic cars, hot rods, trucks, signs, buggies, and much more.

The auction lasted two days and were jam packed with participates and vehicles. Spectators are allowed to wander around and look at everything in advance. If you are lucky the owner may be there and you can ask questions.

How the process works is this. Any body can attend the auction and pay a daily fee to get in and just watch. Bidders must pre register to do so and pay for the privilege. If you buy you then must pay a percentage of about eight percent on top of that. Sellers also pay to have there vehicles auctioned. If they sell the vehicle they too pay a percentage. Sometimes that percentage gets negotiated if the deal is close. Normally Frank Mecum is the one that will step in to help. His father Dana Mecum is also working the floor to make everything run smooth. And it does. You will find the three main auctioneers to be very likable as is the other people working the floor. Every section has a Mecum employee working with the bidders. It’s really a beautifully run machine.

If you make the deal State Farm Insurance is there to help you get the necessary insurance Home. Mecum has there own trucks so you can have them deliver your new purchase to your front door.

The bidding is very simple. Some vehicles are no reserve. Meaning, what ever is the highest bid wins the vehicle. Some vehicles have a reserve price that only the seller knows. The bidding must get to that and whomever bids the highest gets the car. There is also a place known as the bidding goes on desk. This is where if a car does not sell you can go over there and possibly make a deal there.

It’s a circus like affair and I mean that in the most positive light. It’s a well oiled machine. TV cameras are rolling with expert announcers to give the audience at home a bit more information. The bidding can also be done by telephone or by the internet. Social media is a large presence too.

It’s a car guys paradise. In advance of the actual event you can go on the Mecum web site and see if there is anything you want to bid on. You can be anywhere in the world and watch it streaming live right from wherever you are. For those lucky enough to attend it’s like Christmas morning. For example the 1968 Mustang GT 350 in the picture was bid as high as $125k but did not meet the reserve. So, that one goes back to the owner. It was a beautiful car. One thing that I want to mention is that the super bright lights for TV make almost every vehicle look great. It’s only when you are there in person do you see bubbles, crack, dents, or other items you may not see on the TV. Everything is sold “as is” and you should do your homework firat.

The auction event is fun for everyone and it’s an Experience you will never forget. So many hot rods, classics, rare cars, resto mods, and so on. You won’t be bored and you won’t want it to end. I would highly recommend going to one of these events. They are at different locations all across the country. Several companies like Barrett Jackson, Sothebys, RM auctions and so on seem to be near a major city all year long. Mecum just happens to be number one for the most sold. The entire experience is worth the time and money to go. And best of all you may be fortunate enough to buy your own fast muscle car. The auctions are just jam packed with great cars. Something for everyone is what you hear a lot.

So, now you have a better understanding of how this process works. It’s time for you to get to one and enjoy the experience.

Here is a Dodge that gets little lovin but it really should. Most of these Coronets came with the famous and durable 225 slant six engine. It is probably going to go down as the best engine Dodge ever produced for the masses. You might fire right back and say I am nuts that the 383, 440, or the Hemi should get the honors. Or, how about the 273 or the 318, 340, or 360! Again, all good choices but the slang six us the winner. Unbelievable durability and a peppy little engine.

You could not kill this engine even if you a used it. Most never tried of course but it fit the Coronet and many other Mopar products for a long time. I have a history with this engine and to this very day love that engine. If you had it in this plain looking Coronet it would run forever. But we all know what a lot of guys did in the dark behind closed doors in this car. They dropped in the 383. The 426 Wedge, and the Hemi. Then the game changed of course. The car was not heavy, it had plenty of room under the hood, great interior space and with a little nudge Thai sleeper turned into a street monster. I know as I saw it done. The car was light enough that if you dropped in the big dog you were nearly unbeatable on the road.

But, let’s just stick to the slant six. 225 cubic inches of engine that was quiet, easy to maintain, and easy on the fuel. Add it all up and you my friend had a winner on your hands. So don’t dismiss a classic car with a slant six. They were great power plants and easy on the eyes and body. Certainly no land speed records will be given out but you will have a long term classic car that will not cause you any sleepless nights.

I saw this today on the web and it reminded me of some of the bad fashions and styles of the 1970’s. Only the guy that posted this is actually looking for this car. Apparently he wants it back or desires to know where it is. If he wants it back and it’s still around I doubt someone would resell it. Hopefully if it is around the new owners painted it back to the correct colors.

But back in the late 1960’s and into the 1970’s fashion took a holiday. We all went crazy over pin stripping and wild color schemes. Could you imagine taking a ’70 Bird today and painting it like this? Someone would have you committed. But I guess someone somewhere may know what happened to this car. There all kinds of web sites dedicated to lost cars. Even though this car is butt ugly by today’s standards back in the day it was fashionable so don’t hunt the owner and punch him.

Hindsight is always easy for everyone and I would bet this poor guy is sore from kicking himself. Let’s soften the beating and hopefully help find this car. Maybe it’s long gone by now but it’s worth a try.

UPDATE: as of today there are no leads on the flower top car we focused on last week that was stolen. Seems hard to imagine a car like that can disappear without a trace. A $50,000 reward is offered by Hagerty so they are very serious about finding that car. Need 50k?

This is a lesson for all of us interested in our hobby. What do you want, and which era is the better of the two? I saw this picture and it brought up what I think is a great question. Which would you rather have? The old or the new? Well, we all dig the the styling I hope of both eras but which one tickles you?

I am a lucky guy in that I managed to work hard and get cars from both eras. But, I am asked all the time which one do I like better. I think it’s a great question and I am stumped. Clearly the newer ones have creature comforts and more bells and whistles. The older ones have pure power and history now. The older ones steer like ships and really are not all that comfortable as the newer ones. However, they are way cool and my guess is the hobby guy or gal would rather have the older one in the garage. It’s just my opinion now so don’t get angry.

The newer cars are better in almost every category except they are not held in a high regard- yet. They have not earned there wings yet so time will tell but it will take quite a while. I mean the 67 GTX or the 70 Road Runner were popular back in the day but today they are sought after like nobody ever thought. Will a 2009 Challenger with the Hemi be sought after in 40 Years? Likely I will be ashes to ashes at that point so that is why I pose the question now. I would love to read your opinions on the matter. Please think it through carefully and not a knee jerk reaction please.

Here is a great example of the before and after shot. Obviously the reason I showed this is for all you guys out there who want to start a project or need to finish one.

The process is a long one and full of twists and turns. You will experience so many headaches you did not imagine. The money will feel like it’s falling out of your wallet fast. Some close to you will tell you that you are over your head. Others will say it’s not worth it. The challenge all of us have while doing our projects is not to throw in the towel. It is easy to quit and chalk it up to experience. I am here to give you hope. My projects were costly but I never wanted to quit. It’s my nature to see the storm through. You can do it too if you block out the noise. When you feel like all hope is lost turn to the people you know you can trust. Look for a mentor a person who believes in you and your project. When parts are scatters all over the floor and another order goes on back order you will need to take a deep breath.

We all have budgets and must live within them. Nobody said you need to finish the project this spring. It may take you longer to do it right. What’s another few months to do it right? If you rush you may regret a decision and then undoing that mistake could take longer. Some cars cost more to rebuild or restore but those are the ones that will bring the most satisfaction. Looking at these pictures gives you an idea what this person dealt with. But, look at the results! I know exactly what that joy feels like. When I drive one of mine when done I feel like a teenager again. Heck, just starting it up and hearing the engine roar was such a high point. Please, do not give up the fight. Don’t be another guy who needs to advertise on Craigslist. Finishing what you started is a dream. You can make your dream come alive but you will need to work at it. Longer and harder than you imagined but when you are done few things equal the happiness. So, let’s go!

I guess on second thought it is not just American. But, I have never been across the Pond to see first hand if the hobby people there do silly things like this. Not very safe at all but it works. I may have tried this myself years ago but not now. Hats off for thinking this will work and I guess it did but please folks do not try this at home. The interesting item in this picture is one you cannot see.

This project is going on in a regular neighborhood in America and not some farm somewhere. There are houses all around this project. How would you like to live next door to this? Or, try selling your home. Good luck. I like the project and like the way the guy thought about it but I am against it here. Now, here is where he may only have to do this but it wrecks the area. Look at all the stuff all over the place. Imagine the noise ?

Safety should be first in any project. Everyone needs to think about what they are doing and how they intend to do it. I saw firsthand in my career some very bad accidents. Almost all were avoidable. Someone did something very stupid or did not think it through. There is nothing funny about needing to call a loved one with very bad news. I have done it and hope to never do it again. I love the idea of the project but this is not the place to do this. Nor, should this tactic be used. Jack stands, floor jacks, hoists or other safe means are the only way. Using barrels are not. Let’s be safe and smart in our work and use common safety sense.

From time to time there are murmurings about the Pontiac Firebird coming back to our streets as a legitimate model. Unfortunately, as a bona fides brand it still stays as paperwork somewhere, but that hasn’t stopped individual makers and artists coming up with their own modern interpretations. This design comes from designer Kasim Tibekov in the form of the Firebird TT Concept.

The design clearly has a muscular look with a wide body kit, supercharged V8 from a Ford Shelby GT500 and a clear muscle car design that would make anybody proud on the road or track. This design is clearly fantastic and would make a fine muscle car no matter the model or brand, but it obviously just needs the right decals to finish off the look completely.

There have been conversion kits around for a few years that will turn your regular vehicle into a Firebird lookalike, especially for the modern-day Camaro as you can see from the video below. Conversion kits like these are probably the nearest your going to get to an actual modern day Pontiac Firebird, but for those who love the model this is probably nearest you will get for some time me thinks. At least for now you can enjoy these modern interpretations, which arguably look more fantastic than we have at the moment.

I saw these two old photos on the web today and thought they were worth sharing. Yes, the vehicles are antiques and very old. But, is it relevant to what is going on today?

The answer is a big YES? Go to any car web page and someone has posted a burn out gone wrong or other so called funny event. Yes we see the cars fishtailing and getting into a unlucky crowd. The question is why? Before I get to that I must tell you I heard some guys talking last week about this very subject. They were Anti Ford guys and claimed its always a Mustang leaving an event when this happens. I kept my big mouth clamped shut during this conversation. No matter what I would have said these Einsteins had it in there head only Mustangs crash.

I wanted to butt in and remind them that Mustangs outsell Camaro’s and Challengers right now but saved my breath. They are right about one item however. Plenty of people with little to no experience are buying these modern day hot rods. To go along with that they generally have little to no skills in operating a high horsepower car. First, they should not be doing burnouts to impress the onlookers. That gets everyone in trouble and could possibly shut down the entire event. Secondly, street racing is illegal and dangerous. Put 500 to 700 horsepower under the foot of a person with no experience and you are asking for trouble.

If you want to defy death go somewhere alone and try it. But, on the street where you could hit and kill innocent drivers or pedestrians is crazy. TV shows glamorize the burnouts and wild driving. I don’t see the same shows explaining how to get drunk or drugged up and then try to fly an airplane. It’s foolish and very dangerous. Nobody in there right mind would hand a loaded gun to a child and hope for the best would they? So, why glamorize you racing through the streets like the fast and furious without regard to safety? Please folks use common sense. If you are going to buy a high horsepower car there consequences you must be aware of. Like anything that can kill or maim you must use your noodle. Don’t show off leaving an event. Some events sanction burnouts or quarter mile runs. That’s cool and it is well planned out. Getting on your city streets and trying to drive like Steve McQueen is asking for trouble. Most of read our local paper whether in paper form or electronically. The news nearly everyday reflects a bad incident on our roads. Speeding, texting, carelessness, or mere stupidity gets those folks a casket. Don’t be a fool. Be safe and leave events and shows properly.

I have written a few articles in the past on the definition of a muscle car, mostly for my own information but also because of the numerous arguments I have had over the years about what is or isn’t a muscle car, or even a pony car for that matter.

If this is right or wrong would need more clarification, but the editors of the page have a tight stranglehold on the information.
In not too much of a summary, the term muscle car has no one point of origin and if you read the articles below, there are numerous sources for where it originated.

The hobby is and was a way of life. For those on the outside they will never understand your love for the muscle car way of life. This 1967 Plymouth GTX is a perfect example. Certainly it is not the fastest or the quickest but for some lucky person it’s everything.

The muscle car life is really a big social club. If you go to a local cruise it’s not hard to make new friends. If you are really lucky and get to a national auction or possibly SEMA you feel like the world revolves around your car. We have so many choices of makes, models, years, style, options it can make your head spin. It’s an endless stream of possibilities for you to embrace. Most of us treasure our cars. We will never be driving a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or other so called super cars but that is just fine. Our humble Chevelle, Mustang, Camaro, or GTX is just fine. The muscle car life is a fun life. You enjoy the sounds, smells, and the associated fun that goes along with having a muscle car. For those on the outside, they will never understand. You do. You worked hard to get your car. Many sacrifices were made in order for you to fulfill an inner need. The clock seems to tick faster for us living with winter ever year. It just seems like it all started and suddenly you are thinking about how to store your prized car. Not everyone can live in California or Florida.

For me I like when strangers at a car show would ask me questions. I liked answering inquiring minds and always made sure I was pleasant. It is a life to love. Nice weather, beautiful cars, an open Road, and losing yourself on the road to freedom. Most of us treasure those times. It’s what we love. Some love boating, or hunting to fill the void. We however love our muscle cars. Who would have thought that driving a 40 to 50 year old muscle car would be fun? It’s more than fun- it’s awe inspiring. The friendships, the fellowships and the memories last forever. So don’t worry about what the other guy has. Be happy you are part of a select group of people that are muscle car people.

Lastly, be sure you are spending some time working on the next generation to love our cars. A theme we all hear is ” Who is going to drive these in the future”? It’s a great question but the answer lies in all of us.
It is up to us to inspire the young people today to be involved in the muscle car world. It’s a lifestyle and a great way to make friends worldwide. Never in our history of the muscle car have we had the ability to reach people and places far away from our home base. You can make a positive difference and reach across the isle. I hope your driving days are safe and your memories last forever.

The Dodge Demon has set the bar for muscle cars and production cars with a new 9.65 seconds quarter-mile time and 0 to 60 mph in only 2.3 seconds. Impressive numbers but the Demon will need 100+ octane racing fuel and some other optional extras to hit its full 840 hp.

Although there are caveats to the Dodge Demon’s top line power and performance, the car can still be driven straight from the factory and produce eye watering times. In Eco mode the Demon has 500HP and will use its trans-break it to lock the transmissions output shaft at launch and builds the supercharger up to 8 psi of boost. This mode also starts in second gear. This produces a quarter mile time of 11.59 seconds. Not too bad for a 4,280-pound curb weight.

If you compare this time to the likes of an Giulia Quadrifoglio with 505Hp doing 12.1 seconds or even an Audi R8 V10 doing 11.8 seconds with 4 wheels, the Dodge is producing quite impressive times.

Pictures can say a thousand words. We all have heard that story up until photo shopping became a way of life. Now, pictures are important but deeper dives are now the norm. One can easily be fooled and yes it has happened to many.

I have a friend that loaded up his trailer and drove eight hours for his dream Corvette he bought on eBay. Upon arrival the car was nothing like what was advertised. The pictures were old and the seller used stock photos. Needless to say my friend did not buy that car and reported the fraud. But, he wasted a 16 hour round trip plus meals and a hotel for the night all for nothing.

So, I saw these pictures of great cars that were discovered in the usual places and thought how beautiful they were. At this stage the cars are as pure as a new fallen snow. There is no secret what condition they are in and what you need to do. Is it the best way to buy a project? Well, yes if you want the most work and the highest repair expenses. But, sometimes you buy a classic car that looks done or partially done and you find when you get it home you need to tear it down. Shoddy work, poor labor skills,and yes you may find second rate parts were used.

I am a purist and I want all of my vehicles right. I want the right parts installed and I want it done right. Most of us do. I have bought a few cars that the wiring was terrible, the fit and finish was not that good and worst of all- someone really did not know what they were doing. It caused more work and additional monies. We stood back at times and scratched our heads and wondered who could have done something this stupid. But, it was in my possession now and it was now up to me to correct these miscues. When you restore a classic there are no excuses and no second rate repairs. So, if you are going to do it by all means do it right the first time.

when I see hot rods like these, it brings many associations. How cool the owners must be to own rides like these. Sure, I may be alone in the neighborhood with that thought but these rides are sweet. The windshield on the one on our left is so small I am not sure I could see where I was going. It would be like watching Mr. MaGoo cartoons again with him driving on the roller coaster.

We have respect for these cars as we understand the costs involved to make these cars cool. We also know the hard labor and the other items you gave up along the way to make the dream come true. My only beef with anyone who does these hot rods is when they have say a ’33 Ford and they drop in a Chevy 350 engine. It’s the easy way out and I don’t like it. It’s a Ford, keep it a Ford.

Same as if it were a 34 Chevy. Drop in a Chevy power plant. Some might say, Jimmy Crack Corn it’s not that big of a deal but it is. Don’t always take the easy way out. Dig deeper, work a bit harder, show your love and you will not be sorry folks. Now back to the hot rods.

It’s on my bucket list especially since I got to sit in a steel bodied ’32 Ford recently. I know someone who has had one forever and I just planted my carcass in it recently. No chop here, so with the way he mounted the seat I had plenty of head room and that buggy has my mind spinning. It certainly is a two seater no matter what but as long as it’s comfortable and I can see where I am going, it’s the hot rod for me.

So, all you hot rodders out there keep building and showing us the way. It certainly is a way of life or I should call it a lifestyle instead. Either way I finally get it. So much so I made an inquiry last night to a car I know hidden in a barn. I sent a note to the guy and asked for his rock bottom price for the Model A and told him I wanted to make a bad ass hot rod out of it. I await his response as I write this. I guess the whole deal just needed a little push and I got it. Now for the hard work.

The Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Charger Daytona Winged Warrior cars were some of the most outlandish designs of the muscle car era. Dodge built roughly 503 Daytonas, while Plymouth sold 1935 Superbirds to comply with NASCAR ruling.

The Superbirds outsold the Daytonas, but the Charger Daytona was a more focused program by Chrysler, who employed aerodynamicists and the like to simply win at NASCAR. The Superbird in comparison was mainly built to lure Richard Petty back from Ford after the 1969 season. The Superbird didn’t sell very well at the time and only competed for half a season, but this hasn’t diminished its long-term spot in muscle car history.

As the nose cone and wing were more an aesthetic on the Plymouth, the aerodynamics people at Plymouth argued that the changes actually made the car 1-3 mph slower than the Daytona. This could be significant over qualifying and longer races, but it didn’t stop the Superbird, winning many times in 1970.

So, the Plymouth Superbird arguably adopted the nose and rear wing to make it more visually pleasing, while the Charger Daytona was more aerodynamically crafted.

Yes, a line from a little known band called the Beatles. However, the picture should bring back many fond memories for most of us over 45 years old. Our family had the wagon and the pop up trailer and as a family unit we did all of our vacations this way. Certainly we were not high rollers but we did not know any better. What we did know is we had a nine passenger station wagon that was big, ugly, and slow. We would tool down the highway and look out the windows in glee. We would see other families doing the same thing. The big deal back then was to put a sticker on your car or trailer of all the states and places you traveled too.

However, my brother and I did more than stare out the windows. We would watch out for fast muscle cars and who ever named them first won. We saw everything as the family crossed the two lane highways back in the day. Ironic that those cars were cool then but now those same cars are classics and very desirable. Yes, we saw guys pulling trailers with hot rods and never thought twice about it. Back then the car you drove for groceries was the car you stuck snow tires on as well. If only we had known would we have done any different? I doubt it.

Life had so many twists and turns along the way my guess is we would have been forced to sell it. As a matter of fact my brother had a car with a 426 Wedge engine in it and he sold that for money to get married to the woman he would later divorce. So, you cannot say that you would have somehow saved that special car back in 1969 and brought it out of storage some 40 plus years later.

It has happened but as you know it is very rare. Yes, we all dream of finding the little old lady that has that rare off beat car in her garage. But, they are becoming fewer and fewer. There are many tricks to be done to locate cars just by VIN numbers and so on. Sorry, I am not telling you the secret. But, ever wonder how the guys on TV seem to run across the rare cars? Certainly some owners tip them off to get there 15 minutes of fame but there are other tactics used by each state to locate some cars. Most folks will use finder fees.

I use social media and a wide variety of people. Just yesterday a lady friend tipped me off to an old truck in the heartland of our country. Now, the real work begins. So, this holiday weekend I ask you to be safe, be smart, and ask total strangers you may meet if they have any leads. All they can say is No. So, go forth young man and lady and make a dream a reality.

The terms pony car and muscle car can sometimes seem interchangeable, with the pony car being the old term for most sporty vehicles. Now the term muscle car is the standard.

This short video goes into the history of the pony car interest to give a definition for both types. A muscle car being a high-performance vehicle optimised for straight-line speed. Now the term more or less covers any American. We will drive vehicle, mostly built by the three big manufacturers of Dodge, Ford and Chevy.

The pony car can be traced back to the Ford Mustang with a smaller engine type, which can be classed these days something built in the lower range from any of the big three. Today’s top end Mustangs, Camaros and Corvettes could also be seen as high-end sports cars, along with the soon to finish Dodge Viper.

So, it’s easy to get confused over the terminology, but this video should give you some clarification on both sets of vehicles.

This is the picture I long for everyday. I have said it so many times I have lost count. When I see a picture of an old car being hauled out of a barn and seeing the sunshine for the first time in years I get happy feet. It’s a Model A car and clearly someone took off the fenders at one point and was trying to achieve something. My guess is someone started a hot rod project at one time and lost the desire. I would be a buyer of this in a heartbeat if the price was right. Certainly it will need the brakes and steering repaired and hopefully the engine turns. If the motor is not locked up then I am in deep. Sure the seat inside is bad but it’s only a seat. Tires are more than likely dry rotted and I know it sounds like the list is growing. It is growing and it reminds me of my current 28 Model A project.

Again, I am becoming an expert on a car I never imagined I would. But now with education comes power and confidence. Now, I I know first hand what to look for and what to expect. This car is perfect for a hot rod. Yes, flip it upside down and drop in a big Ford engine and rebuild this lightweight into a cool heavy weight.

My reminder to all of you is to get out and circulate. When you hear the masses claim all the barn finds are dried up ignore them and run out and find them. Plenty of cars and trucks are out there waiting for the right person to snatch them up and bring them back to life. Circulate, talk to people, let everyone know you buy old cars. Go to Vista Print and get business cards made up. For under twenty bucks you can have five hundred simple cards made. Your name, your email, your phone number and what you are looking for. I did it and pass them out all over the place hoping for a gold strike. Now, it’s your turn to stop reading about other people finding cars and you be the one that finds the cars.

This is a tough one to write about. I studied this picture and went to the depths of my brain to say something good. The house appears to run down a bit and has seen better days as well. The car, well the car has seen better days too. I am unsure what the hole in the hood is for. Did someone home make a cold air system? It’s funny that someone still feels the love for the car as they at least threw a cover over the top. The tires and wheels are right out of the late 70’s and 80’s and I dread to see what the interior may look like. Did they butcher the interior too? What about that screaming 350 engine? So many questions I would love to ask the owner but I get the feeling I know some answers. He will probably say he is going to restore it as soon as he gets the time. Clearly money cannot be the issue…….

So, is this worth saving from the crusher? I hate the crusher except for one time. I watched a school bus company crush a school bus once. They would strip everything out of the buses and then introduce the front end to this massive crushing machine. Then, in a short amount of time the machine would eat the bus and at the other end would be scrap metal. They do not do this anymore as they found a new market for our worn out school buses. You guessed it. They drive them to the ocean and they are shipped to Brazil, Mexico, and other ports of call where they continue life.

As for the Camaro I vote we take it to the shore. If this was a 67,68,69 maybe I would think differently but this old car has been used, abused, and is taking up valuable space now. I mean, who knows what treasures are in the garage!

Few cars of the late 1960’s and early 70’s were as hard core as the Chevelle. Even today, all these years later the Chevelle from 1969 and 1970 still bring in big money. Why? Why would a car that could have a 307 or a 350 V8 under the hood be so valuable? Answer. Because some were smart enough to buy the car with the nasty 396 or the monster 454.

They called the 454 the heavy Chevy at one time and not because it weighed so much. The “heavy Chevy” was a slang or nickname back in the time that really meant the car was a badass.

Even today the SS 396 and 454 captivates the audiences when presented at auction. If it’s matching numbers your price you pay will increase. These were the golden days for Chevrolet and they knew it. Now, rarely do we see a 69 Chevelle driving the streets today with big fat rear tires. That was the norm at one time. Jack up that ass end, throw out the front camber and cruise the streets looking for your next victim. Oh boy those were the days.

Crank up your fm converter radio or throw the latest Eight track in and turn it up to hear it over the thrush mufflers. Man that kind of talk is nice. But, the Chevelle with the big V8 engines and with its light rear end could make for a good hot rod. Could? No, it did. These were all over America setting the tone for what would be a life long love affair. Now, here we are in the year 2017 and the Chevelle’s of that time stamp are as hot as ever. Sometimes my friends the good old days really were just that.

Okay let’s argue the fact that the Maverick is a fast muscle car. Sounds pretty silly on the surface, but is it?

The Ford Maverick was a car that earned a reputation as a grocery getter. You know, a straight six cylinder engine in a small to mid size car. There is certainly nothing special about the Maverick. Well, at least that is or was the popular opinion.

The Maverick and Falcon were once considered to be built into what we know today as the Mustang. However, cooler heads prevailed and the Mustang is the Mustang and the Maverick is just history. It was cheap looking and not at all notable. The dash appearance was bare bones and the car was noted for severe rust issues in the snow belts.

But, could the Maverick be our hot rod like a wolf in sheeps clothing? Well, the answer just might be yes. How? Well, you could order a Maverick with Fords powerful 302 V8 engine. It was an option few purchased as the car was just not known to be a car with power.

Today, the ones that survived ( and few did) can be found with a secret under the hood. I mean if back in the day you pulled along side a Maverick you would laugh at the thought. Again, known as a mid level car with a very under powered six cylinder engine. But, a few wise birds found they could buy the Maverick with the 302 engine and it was cheaper than buying a Mustang with the same power plant.

The Mustang of course lives and prospers while the little Maverick died a slow death. Sales fell sharply and the little grocery car was given the pink slip. However, all these years later there are Maverick clubs all over the world. Down under the Maverick was badged a different name and of course out fitted with the steering wheel on the right.

Here in North America Maverick sightings are rare. The little car that wanted to just couldn’t. The competition in house was just too strong and the Maverick barely ever gets any love anymore. I know that when I cruise the car show circuit I will stop in my tracks and look one over.

It is a shame the car didn’t sell better but the problems were somewhat self induced. Again, rust was the biggest issue with the Maverick. Second, Ford was pushing the Mustang and the end came soon. So, I ask you – next time you see a Maverick show a little love for the car that just could not compete.

Then there are the guys that really like the sleeper look. Take that Maverick and look under the hood. Nearly any engine will fit into that huge space. That opens all kinds of ideas to make your Maverick one very hot car. Lightweight bodied, big engine, a solid transmission, and some wheels and tires and the laughing will turn into gasps. All in good fun but I promise I won’t write about hot rod Pintos next. You got to draw the line somewhere.

You scoff at the idea of a VW Challenger don’t you? However, recent comments by the leader of VW said he is open to talks with FCA. Yikes.

As we all know VW was rocked by ‘diesel gate’. Yes they were caught cheating on the diesel particulate matter by of all people the students at WVU. Better known as Weat Virginia University. Well, since being caught and then lying about it they have been fined billions of dollars and just about abandoned the Diesel engine program. I feel that is a terrible shame as that Diesel engine was durable and powerful.

Now VW is focusing on electric cars, hybrids and gasoline engines. They have said in the press they are really going to lean toward the future of electric cars. They set lofty goals years ago but never obtained the target. Now, they are rebuilding the brands image. What better way to do so than take on a struggling car maker such as Fiat. The Fiat brand has been a dud in the North American market to date.

It does seem odd VW would want to buy or merge with FCA, but don’t rule anything out. The Ram badge is not included in these rumors. But, if you own a Charger or a Challenger your parent company is Fiat. And, with sales that are soft the leader of FCA has said he would like a merger with another viable automaker. To date nobody has bitten on that hook but maybe VW might be right?

Even though VW has billions of dollars in fines they still have very deep pockets. Much deeper than FCA. So, we will need to keep an ear to the rail on this one. It just might be the right combination. After all, who do you thinks owns the Bugatti Veron? Yes, VW, as well as the Bentley brand. So, stop laughing and start thinking that this merger might save the struggling FCA brand. Time will tell so stay tuned.

By most standards a white muscle car is not tough. Red Corvette, black Camaro. Torch blue Mustang, Hemi Orange and so on. But white? Nah, it’s not a tough color to impress. Until now. The only other tough white car I can remember is the white car in the movie Vanishing Point but we know how that ended.

So, I stood back and said ” Would I order a white car”? Years ago I would have said no way. It did not have that scary,mean look for me. I was one of those that had to have tough colors like red, orange, black and even the Mopar lime green. I think that lime green only goes to Mopar. I just cannot picture it on any thing else.

But, times change and I changed. Or, I grew up maybe but I saw this car in the picture and admitted to myself that white is perfect. Use the right decals or stripes, accent it with a wheel and tire package and you have cool. I guess the interior would look good in black but I have a picture in my archives of a Cuda from a car show a few years ago that was white with a drop dead beautiful red leather interior. In fact it was for sale at the time and I inquired about it. It was not matching numbers and his price was not outlandish. I just wanted matching numbers at the time. So, today I stand before you a new man. White is cool. In fact, it’s red hot cool now and it’s overdue. I mean how many of us can go to a car show and see a dozen red Corvettes? After a while they all blend together. And, I am not picking on the Vettes, line up ten plum crazy Challengers and the same applies. Bring on the white and bring on the changes. IF you can’t quite afford one of these, then you could consider auto loans for buying a car.

This is how we rolled back in the day. This is a 69 Hemi Road Runner and as you can see it has a few bumps and bruises. But, we nearly all stuck on the Cragar SS wheels, jacked up the back end a bit and drove. ( Rolled) so what if the hood was a bit beat up, or the side of the car was a little crinkled. We rolled. We would either fire up ( turn on) the am radio loud or use a fm converter to listen to deep rock and roll. If we had extra money we splurged ( spent more) on a eight track player and 6×9 speakers. If you had that set up you were really cruising hard. (driving with more fun)

The little things like the wiper blades did not matter nor if you had a side marker light out, you were rolling. The tires might be recraps ( used tires with a cap on the tread) and the seats might be a bit worn but it did not matter. What would you rather do in the following scenario? Pick up a hot chick ( good looking female) in your old mans ( father) station wagon or your very own love machine. ( your own car) Easy answer of course. Back in the day the chicks ( girls) went for the dudes ( guys) that had there very own wheels. ( cars).

So, if the car was a bit rusty or a bit worn it did not matter because you had a ride ( car again) versus the other loser guy who didn’t. He was the Poor fool who could not borrow the family truckster ( family car with sticky floors) on a Friday night. So, we put the tight jeans on, slicked our hair back to look like KC of the KC and the Sunshine band and we were gone for the submarine watching for the night. (Necking) or better known as making out. ( which was really hugging and kissing)

Last week was a big week for this old boy. It was a double super secret week but now I can tell you what happened. First, my brother was in town for a very important mission. To play golf at one of the hardest courses we know and to replace the carb on my Road Runner. Ok, just so you know, every trip my brother makes it must involve a game of golf or he is not showing up.

So, I bought a new Holley 750 carb and of course like everything else I buy someone has another opinion. Yep, I leave my truck patina and the comments I get is I should paint it. I bought a Shelby after years of wishing and dreaming and I am told I should have bought something else.

I left my Road Runner original stock and I am told I should add chrome wheels and such. I put chrome wheels on my other Mustang GT and I am told I should have left the originals. I cannot win.

So, from here on out I have two answers for all the geniuses who want to tell me what to do. First, it’s mine and I paid for it. Two, why don’t you buy one and do what you want to. Gadzooks I get tired of opinions and criticisms all the time regarding my stuff. Go get your own stuff and leave me alone! Jeepers. But, with that comes a pleasant surprise.

I have had several people of late find me a storage building or two. That, I like because it shows these real friends are looking out for me. For that I am grateful. One guy in particular with a pile of his own kids is my biggest supporter and I am grateful. But, the search is over. Surprise number two is I found a garage that is fourteen bays and I am going to add a lift to it. Pictures will be released soon but not the location of course. Lastly, my brother advised me he is 85 percent done with my Model A. Jiminy Crickets it will be fun to have it in my stable soon. And, golly, he installed my new Carb on the RR.

He took the old carb and I already bought a rebuild kit for it. I want him to rebuild the old one and have it ready in case. But, this new Holly is very sweet. It made an immediate positive change to the performance of the car. It was a very hot day that day and the humidity was very high. I was literally sweating gallons as he stayed hunched over the fender for a long period of time to make the necessary corrections. He did not gripe or complain but he stayed focused on his task at hand. It bothered me greatly I was not the one replacing the carb like I did so many times before but it is was it is. So, much was accomplished during the secret week. A new place to store cars year round, a new carb for the RR, and a few other things I cannot mention here.
