This was my dream car from the time I was 12. I finally had a little money saved up, so I bought the car for myself on Father’s Day 17 yrs ago. I was 40, it started it’s life as a red on red 68 GT J code, first year for the 302.

I drove from Savannah Ga. to Dallas Tx with the help of a friend on a weekend, straight there and back, over 40 hrs. I already had in my mind what I was going to do, my version of the Bullitt car. I had a 390 built for it and bought a new tremec tko 600 5 speed with the help from my Dad. I got a 9″ with disc brakes on it out of a Lincoln Versailles and had a 373 gear put in it with posi.

When I got it home I first sand blasted it and put in epoxy primer. I drilled holes through floor pans into the front frame rails and sprayed it with rust inhibitor with a wand I built to hook to a paint gun. I also sprayed inside the cowel vents.

I sound proofed the inside and under fender wells and bottom of the car with Quiet car and I painted it with the finish paint. Having it up on hand built saw horses 4′ off the ground made it easier to work on. I then removed the real louvers at the sail panel and welded in some steel. I took the fake vent in front of the rear wheels and added about 3″ of metal to make it a real vent that goes through to the rear wheels so it won’t fill up with muck and rust. Doing this made the upper and lower vents line up. I also purchased and installed a new grab-a-trac suspension. I shaved the door handles and put in actuators and poppers, I installed electric window tracks. It had originally been on a rotisserie and had the floor pans replaced.

Bullitt-Mustang image

Working on a limited budget all this work took me 6 yrs. 2008 was rough on the economy and all work stopped. I installed the engine and tranny so every once in a while I would fire this beast up for motivation.I had installed 3″ Magna flow all the way back from my hooker long tube headers so the sound was amazing!

I would try and do bodywork because that didn’t cost me much, wishing my Dad lived down here to help since he is a bodywork master, I had figured out I was not good enough for me to be happy, so it sat, and sat….

I started my own business in 2017 and this was a game changer, I was able to do what I wanted so I bought all the parts to finish my build, new interior, leather Scat seats, wiring kit, Dakota VHX gauges, Fast 2.0 fuel injection, stereo components, so I could build what I wanted. 1 piece fiberglass headliner that has a carbon fiber look. It was like Christmas every day for months.

Finally, paint was applied and I cried like a little girl, it was happening and I was witnessing it. I pretty much did everything else myself, I did have help with some wiring and fuel injection installation. After what I thought was completion I started having engine issues, running hot, the block was also bored too much and a cylinder wall cracked.

It was a nightmare, I told myself if I had to pull the engine again I would get rid of the shock towers and put in a rack and pinion. After taking like 6 hours to change spark plugs and wires, it continuing to overheat and pulling the motor for the 3rd time because of issues, I was done.

I was heartbroken and thinking this was never going to end. I ordered a rack and pinion and dug out the firewall. My wife walked out and looked at me and started crying. What are you doing she gasped, the time, the money, OMG. I said don’t cry, it is going to get better I promise, it will be ok!

Bullitt-Mustang image

After installing the kit from Rod and Custom, which I swear was the easiest part of the whole build and getting a friend to weld er up after I tacked it off I felt like I could finish it. I got some great advice from an engineer and got rid of the cheap aluminum radiator and got a Be Cool radiator and fans.

Deleted the antifreeze and just put in water wetter and water when it started running cooler. Now she leaks tranny fluid and oil from the same spot. I pulled the tranny to put in a front seal and the FE rear seal.

Now the Mustang is running and it has a little more horsepower and I feel better about her being finished. As we all know it’s never finished. She is a selfish bitch and I have cussed her out 100 times, but she is mine and she will be mine till I die. People say everything is for sale. Not true, I built this car because it was my dream car at 12 yrs old and still now at 57 yrs old, I didn’t spend 17 yrs and countless time to one day get rid of her. This is a muscle car build for life.

Sometimes when a project car is completely totalled, it’s the end of the ride, move on. Not the case with this 1967 Belvedere II owned by Cara Mackenzie. As you will read below, the rebuilt wasn’t just a quick respray or even a barebones restoration. The process also involved swapping out part of the whole chassis.

Much toil, sweat and years/tears later, the Belvedere is now a mashup of the best bits their could acquire. Read on for the full story…

‘The car was originally a 1967 Belvedere II. I owned her for about 7 years. We fixed some body work got her a new carb., an ignition setup, new rims and paint. Drove her almost everyday.

Belvedere-II

In early December my brother was driving her home when rain turned to a bad ice storm. He came over a hill when another car lost control and crossed 3 lanes before smacking into her. The damage totaled her out.
On the inside the dash was completely smashed from my brothers knees an the steering wheel broke in half and the windshield smashed. One of the torsion bars busted through the floor pan which split the firewall and busted the tranny. We saved the engine and most of the interior which then went into a ’66 Coronet.

After fighting with the insurance company and finally settling after 3 months, I got some cash to build her again. We found a 4 door donor car that had almost all we needed to fix it. So the chopping began.
Belvedere-II

After we got all the bad out we cut the two cars down the factory weld seems and then started piecing everything back together. Then we put in a big block K member and manual gear box. After that we put back the suspension and moved her out of the pit and over to the garage for the engine install. Amazingly, the doors closed perfectly on the first try!

Belvedere-II

She now has a 383 that’s been ported, deck with roller rockers, electronic ignition, aluminum intake and lots of other goodies. Still had some issues though. I wanted to keep her with the ’67 grille so we had to change the fenders. We had the left one still but had to find a right one as a replacement. I also went to a Mopar swap meet and got her new carpets and a console. Later we found completely redone bucket seats for her in a nice dark blue.

It’s been a ton of blood sweat and tears to get this far. After 2 years finally came time to turn the key again! She’s started up first time and sounds really, really good! The final bits will be installing the drive shaft and windshield and then she will be ready for a test drive.

We were sent over this 1972 Ford Mustang by Courtis Merry who made this video about his partners brothers 1972 Ford Mustang rebuild.

It’s a great little promotional video, and it’s over to Courtis to explain the back story behind the build….

‘Jimmy purchased his 1972 Mustang when it was in rough shape. Aside from the fact that the engine was running and it had wheels, Jimmy had to start from square one. Through years of replacing one part at a time and doing body work one day at a time, Jimmy was finally able to piece together what you see today.’

‘This Mustang features the original body, frame and windows with an upgraded 351 engine. Jimmy has taken special care to preserve as many original parts as possible. The first time he drove the fully restored car was as his “get away” vehicle on his wedding night.
For Jimmy, this has been more than restoring a piece of history to its original glory. He has come a long way throughout the process.’

South African-based muscle car importers AMCAR  have the stamp of approval to build official replicas of the 1970 Dodge Challenger with a Dynacorn body.

We have heard of muscle car builders throughout the world, but really no rumblings from the African continent, so it’s great news to hear that there are muscle car builders in this area of the world Rebuilding classic muscle cars.
The vehicles will follow the lines of a restomod with a 2016 Hellcat Hemi V8 engine. AMCAR CEO, Craig Buck said the beauty of this project is that the buyer will receive an exact replica of the 1970 Dodge Challenger with the car technology of today.

“What this means is that we will sell the car with the old school look, original components but with modern and state of the art specifications,” said Buck. The company will follow the route of traditional restomodders with classic design and modern engineering. “The thinking behind this is that we want to give our customers the best of both worlds. We mix old and new technology for performance and reliability. This car will be fitted with a modern steering system. The brand new engine is run by a computer, something we are accustomed to in 2016,” said Buck.

Being a custom vehicle with an official stamp of approval means that the customer can order any components they like, along with any color and trim.

The company also specialize in importing pony and muscle cars to South Africa and converting them to right-hand drive, along with complete restorations of classic muscle cars, all under official license from Ford, GM and Mopar.

We built the Duster last year from a roller into what it is. We even painted it. It’s a 512 Blown Alky. My first time out in it last year I ran a 8.51 in a quarter mile. My 60′ time has been about 1.17-1.19 which is awesome. I don’t use the trans break, it’s all foot. I also had a 000 reaction time. When I’m not at the track racing, my daughter and I will take the Demon out for a cruise around town. My husband will bring he’s car out to so we can have a little fun on the street.

This first picture was taken by my husband. I told him we are not going out because I have to get my car ready for the track the next day.

This 1967 Nova owned by Jeff King it’s one of those rides that isn’t overtly powerful, but has just the right amount of upgrades and panache, with a great back story to make it a total winner. A happy medium between the original and the modern without going insane. Jeff owned the car for 20 years, with some help from his brother took it to what you see today.

Nothing crazy under the hood but a TPI 350 SBC engine with the car sitting on 18 inch Forged Union Independent wheels, with Church Boys Racing suspension kit and Viking Performance shock absorbers. the grey stripe on the blue body just bouncing off variation to the detail to give it an enhanced look.

The interior is just as impressive, with blue lit Dakota Digital gauges added to the dash by Painless Performance, with just enough upgrades elsewhere to keep this pro tour still looking classic. If you want to check out the full rundown of the vehicle, check it out here.

Boy oh boy my friends I just finished reading the book written by the Queen of Motor Sports – Linda Vaughn.

Let me begin by providing some background for everyone. I remember very well seeing Linda Vaughn on the Television and wondering who she was. As I aged I followed racing and Linda Vaughn. What a pleasant surprise to learn she had written her first book about her life in Motor Sports.

lindavaughn-54654

Linda will take you on a journey of her life starting out in a very small town in Georgia.
She progresses with her life’s trail and how she worked to get to be the most famous woman of racing.

This is not a kiss and tell book. Thankfully she is old school in that not everything is for public consumption. But don’t be fooled my friends, Linda saw it all, did it all, and worked hard to get where she is.
I would give up much even to know half of the people she interacted with over the years. The book is full of pictures, testimonials, and best of all her stories.
The importance of her family and dear Mother shine through. Linda is a living legend and an angel in a world that runs in high gear. Her stories of all the famous drivers as well as the movers and shakers of Racing keep you on the edge of your seat.

Her career story is captivating not just to us race fans but to anyone who desires to learn how a little girl from down south rubbed elbows with the racing world. I could not wait to turn the pages as Linda spun her tale of a fascinating life. To be able to see pictures of our racing legends and read the back stories was a joy. She is a woman of strength and devotion and never forgot her roots.

Of course we all know she was blessed with amazing looks but check deeper and you will find a very interesting lady with a skill set that still impresses to this very day. You will not be dissatisfied in any way with this book. Easy to read, great stories and lots and lots of pictures.

The book can be ordered from CarTech by calling 1-800-551-4754 or visiting www.cartechbooks.com. I urge you to buy and enjoy the book written by none other than the real queen of Motor sports. The holiday season is upon us and this book would be the perfect gift for that special racing fan in your life.

I will be heading to a few shows in the next few months and I have a new goal now. I want to meet Linda and congratulate her on this book and maybe get an angel pin. ( you must buy the book to understand this)

We have featured girls and their muscle cars in the past, such as Alex Taylor, but probably never one as young as Taylor Hanus and her Camaro.

Taylor always seem to prefer cars over anything else. She started out spending time watching her grandfather “Papa Jack” regularly race, which was obviously the initial motivation that got her started.

At the age of 14 she was treated to an all day Jr. dragster lesson at Doug Foley’s drag racing school, Florida, which were allowed to also try out Doug Foley sons special dragster machine. This led on to 2 years dragster tuition, cementing her love of the sport.

The obvious next step was to take over Papa Jack’s Camaro, which he hasn’t raced since 2010, which led on to Taylor, now 16 to be the youngest driver in the super pro plus at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois.
At the end of this season Taylor ran a best time of 9.04seconds at 148.05mph.

Check out the full video and find out about this marvelous machine and Taylor and the inspiration, that when it comes down to it, if you have the willpower you too can eventually do the same.

I thought I knew the SuperBirds and Daytona’s because they really had few options to choose from. Look at the lime green one in the window. I get that one and I have seen a lot of Superbirds with that color. Now, I had a desire for a Bird for a while but they have priced themselves right out of my market. For the price of a Bird with a 440 I can buy ( and I did) three other classics. Now, I will always love the winged one but the current market has priced them too high for this old boy. But, here is my issue with the picture and my well rounded education. I never saw a Bird in this color or have these wheels. This picture will make me go back to my deep resources and do some discovery work. How many were made in this color? It’s not exactly a hot rod color like a lime green or Petty blue but it is a ‘bird.

My point is we all can learn something new or a little more in this hobby. I met a guy last year at our show that proclaimed he was a Yenko expert. He had a real Yenko Camaro and it was stunning. I just stood there drooling like a buffoon while he spewed all kinds of facts. Some correct, some a little hearsay.

My point is to brush up on your fact machine. I sure will go back and do some more research on this as I always want to learn more. What I grapple with is how many of these were scrapped, crushed, burned, totaled etc in the name of fun. Now, here we are in 2016 and these Birds are a hot item. Who would have guessed. It was not me or anyone I knew because we would have bought one and cared for it. So, before you go out and impress your friends with your knowledge of a particular car please double check your facts. And , don’t rely on Internet information as gospel.

As for the service station photo I included that as a reminder how far we have gone. I did not say forward or backward but I included the picture just for you to enjoy. It’s a time tunnel from our past and it shows are far we have come. I think.

Who doesn’t love a barn find? In the so called old days we did not give this much thought. It was just a car or cars parked in a barn rotting away. If we had guessed say twenty five years ago this would be the rage we could have filled up a parking lot.

The problem is, the word has been out for some time that these car rarities are still out there in barns, fields and any other place you may think you would find a used and abandoned muscle car. However, the takeaway is that these vehicles are still out there, it’s just a matter of looking, keep looking…. and….keep looking.

It’s one thing finding a rarity, it’s another thing bringing it back to life. Many moons ago I went to a body shop where they acid dipped the cars before prepping them for body work. It was tedious and dangerous. Today we have portable blasters that can remove your paint in an hour. It’s still just the beginning of a big project but the time saved is amazing. To get that body down to the bare metal is the plan. Then you can decide if you need a new panel or if some welding is needed. In most cases you will be buying a fender or quarter panel or possibly a floor plan. But, all those parts are available today and the task is much easier.

What was a day of bondo is now a day of clearly seeing exactly what you need to do. I have a barn find on my radar and I know already it needs a floor and trunk pan. But, once cut out I can install the new pieces, weld them in and start my body work. It’s so much easier today than it was years ago. So, do not shy away from rust. It can be fixed. It will be a lot of hard work but you will be way ahead with new pieces.

Heck, we would sand or grind it down in the old days and slap putty all over it. Sand it, prime it, paint it, and in a year it started to show up again. Grrrrrrrr. Today, if you plan and prep right those days are over. Gee, I love technology.

A Pinto, a slant six and a Karman Ghia were some of the latest entries into our latest car show.
Clearly not fast muscle cars but strangely popular with the crowds.

Let’s be honest. The Pinto was a popular car back in the day due to its low fuel consumption. The Ghia was to be a sports car from VW but never caught on. The Slant six may go down as the best all around best engine for Mopar but without much power. Still, the crowds love them. Memories are brought back. Seems everyone had one or knew someone that did. In my case my brother had a Pinto he purposely beat the hell out of but could not kill it.

The Ghia was something my Uncle owned, and my brother and Father both had the 225 Slant six engines. So, in a day where we discuss crate engines and horsepower there is still room for the weak and timid.

Not many of the Pintos or Ghias survive today but the slant six does live on. It’s refreshing to see these little hamsters at the shows and the crowds they seem to gather.

It doesn’t matter which landmass or nationality a muscle car resides or its owner, the passion for the cars is still the same.

This little race takes part at Brands Hatch, UK between two Brits who are going to recreate the chase scene from the film Bullitt.
This involves a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback and a Dodge Charger R/T 440, the same cars used in the original film.
Both cars are in stock condition and are said to be ‘visually’ identical to the ones in the film. the charge of being 375 HP and the Mustang 325HP.

On paper, the Charger has the biggest muscles here and obviously should win, but like any race, many factors are at play which will decide the outcome.

Check out the video and see which you think is the ultimate winner.

‘Back in August of 1996 my brother and I were searching used car lots near his home in San Leandro, California. My brother was looking to buy a 1985 – ’90 5.0 Mustang. We stopped at a used car consignment lot in Hayward so he could view a late ‘80s GT. I then noticed in the front row a blue ’69 Mustang Coupe. Since I own (and it’s my first car) a ’69 Mustang SportsRoof I have always made a habit at taking a closer look at any ’69 or ’70 Mustang. When I got closer to the blue coupe I noticed the Grande emblems on the vinyl top and the holes in the quarter panel extension where the moldings should have been. Torino hub caps were in place where the wire wheel covers should have been. It had a quickie paint job with some shoddy body work underneath. The interior was worn and need to be restored, but wasn’t trashed. So far just an old, used up Grande coupe.

I gave a quick look at the VIN and noticed a “Q” for the fifth digit of the VIN which designates the engine size. After doing a double take I popped open the hood and there was the 428 Cobra Jet engine with its smog equipment still intact. The underside of the hood showed the original color, Lime Gold. The asking price was $4995 and that was reduced from $6995. I decided that this would need some further investigation. Why hadn’t anyone else jumped on this rare find? The lot was located on a very busy boulevard in Hayward and the Grande was parked in the front. Granted it didn’t look like much and there was no hood scoop or emblems giving away its secret under the hood.

The next day I called my friend David Peterson who owned a plain-jane, R-code ’69 SportsRoof. David agreed to inspect the vehicle the next day with me. He found the block had the correct VIN number stamped in the back, but that the heads, intake manifold and carburetor had been changed. We found minor rust on the right floor pan and other various places. We took the Grande for a spin and though it did run, it definitely needed attention. I decided to go ahead and make an offer on it. The sales man said he would run it past the owner and get back to me. The next day after a little more haggling we had an agreement of $3900 out the door. I was to come by with the deposit the next day.

When I arrived at the lot, I noticed the trunk of the Grande was open. When I went inside the sales office, the owner of the car and the salesman said they had been trying to reach me to say that the owner had received a better offer elsewhere. I was crushed, but I decided I was not going to get in a bidding war. I did find out from the owner that his father was the original owner and that the wire wheel covers were stolen while the car had been parked at the lot.

I then went home and tried to forget about the 428 CJ Grand and as time passed I nearly did. Then one afternoon in March ’97 my brother called to say that the Grande was back at the same lot. I called the salesman the next day and he verified that the Mustang was back and still had the same owner. Dave and I went back a couple of days later and verified it was still intact. I mad another offer, but the owner could not be reached. The salesman later called me at home and said my offer of $3500 was accepted and that the owner would be going out that afternoon to obtain a smog certificate.

Then another bump in the road. A few hours later the salesman called back and said it passed smog, but that the smog technician told the owner that the car was worth more than my offer. I was expecting to hear a new price a few thousand dollars higher, but instead I was told a deal could still be made if I upped my offer to $3700 and they kept the aftermarket stereo in the vehicle. Done!

1969-428-CJ-Mustang-67yth435

I picked up the car the following Tuesday with no problems this time and drove it to my parent’s home five miles away so I could arrange to tow it home. I noticed on the smog paper work that the technician put down that it was a 390, not a 428, so he didn’t know what it was. Also in the trunk was a new set of simulated ’66 styled steel wheel hub caps that I was able to sell to a club member for $100.

I spent the next few years accumulating parts for the full-scale restoration. I located the correct heads, intake manifold, carburetor and various NOS moldings and sheet metal. In 1999 Kevin Marti from Marti Auto Works was able to secure build records from Ford so I ordered one of those early Marti Reports to verify the options and find out exactly how many 428 CJ Grandes were built in 1969. Kevin told me that only 37 Q-code Grandes were built in ’69, 28 automatics like mine. He said a Grande could not be ordered with the Ram-Air R-code 428. The Marti Report verified the options on the car included power steering and brakes, heavy-duty suspension, black vinyl roof, console, tinted glass, visibility group, tilt-away steering column, deluxe seat belts, power ventilation (a very rare option), and E70x14 belted white wall tires. Two options were missing from the car that it originally came with: AM/FM stereo radio and front bumper guards. So I later located replacements for those two items.

A later report from Kevin Marti showed that my Grande was one of two 428 CJ Grandes that came in Lime Gold and mine was the only one with black interior making it a one of one. It is also the only 428 Grande with power ventilation.

In 2001 the car was sent to David’s house to have the car completely disassembled and commence the restoration. It was then taken to the media blaster before being sent to D&S Auto Body in San Ramon repair the sheet metal, install used, rust-free quarterpanels and an NOS rear body panel and fender apron. Over the fresh, solid metal the much-maligned Lime Gold was applied.

When the car returned to David’s house in 2005, David spent the next two years meticulously reassembling the Grande to showroom condition. He rebuilt the motor, installed all new suspension bits and made sure all the factory correct markings were applied.

Though 22,186 Grandes were built in 1969, some Grande-specific parts have not been reproduced. For seat upholstery, many Grande owners settle for the available deluxe interior seat covers with its Comfortweave and ruffino inserts rather than the correct hopsack cloth. I wanted this car to be correct so I purchased three yards of the correct material from SMS Auto Fabrics and had Super Auto Upholstery in Hayward copy my original seats and retain the original piping.

The unique two-ton Grande stripe also has not been replicated. I considered buying an NOS kit but figured a 40 year old stripe was not going to work. Instead I bought a NOS stripe kit on eBay and had my friend Ken Souza who owned a graphics company duplicate the stripe with new 3M tape. Ken and his son then installed their finished product, giving the Mustang a correct Grande look.

The car was completed in September 2006, debuting at the Mustang Club of America National in Las Vegas. Many attendees had never seen a 428 Grande before. Judges were impressed as well as it captured a Gold in the Concours Trailered Division. It has since obtained eight more MCA Golds and has moved into the Conservator class.’

‘Also other major awards: Goodguys Mustang 50th Anniversary pick, Hillsborough concours 1st place Mustang class, Ironstone concours 2011 & 2014 class winner.’

Here’s one you do not see much. It is a 2005 Mustang GT. The reason the model is so cool is that it’s the first year after the redesign.
Mustang sales were stagnant and someone at Ford redesigned the ’05 after the ever popular ’67 and ’68 models. Now the car has a 4.6 liter engine rather than the 5.0. For some odd reason Ford did this and it was a dumb idea. Ford lovers desire the 5.0 because it was drilled into everyone’s head that if you had a V8 you wanted a 5.0 like the Fox Body Mustangs.

The real interesting thing about this beauty is that it is mine. I will give you the short version of the story. I was looking for an 05 and found it in Lombard Ilinois. I dispatched brother number two out there to give it a once over. He loved the car except it had a scratch on the passenger door. I called the owner and after some emails and phone calls decided to fly to Chicago to look it over. Brother number one picked me up and took me to Lombard where I sat in this guy’s dining room with his wife. We had a great conversation on many topics and eventually we made a deal. I gave him the money and on Easter Sunday several Suns ago we drove it home. Seven hours in the car and I could have gone longer. But, when I got it home I had a friend paint the entire right side of the car so it would match perfectly. We added a hood scoop, new tires and wheels, a Bama tuner, a cold air intake, and a few other gizmos. The car became a monster on the road. It sat in the heated garage in the winter and sat covered up in the summer. I found a guy selling the side louvers and the car really got a new personality.

For a time it sat in a museum near Youngstown Ohio but I missed seeing it and driving it so I brought her home. I was averaging about 300- 400 miles a year and every mile was a pleasure.
This past winter I stuck it in my 94 year old Mothers garage under the careful attention of my Brother in law. He treats this car as if it was his. He now is in the process of a deep detailing session with the car. However a month or so ago he brought it up to our local Friday night show. He parked it next to my Road Runner and I was in heaven. At the end of the evening he tried to talk me into switching cars but I declined.
I wanted him to do that deep detail on the paint as it is like a mirror. I love this car and cannot ever see selling it. Three years ago I toyed with the idea but my brother number two brought me to my senses. Now, it’s stays as long as I stay. Gadzooks, few cars I have ever owned have brought me such joy. It was a family affair getting it to be mine and now it stays. It’s already the middle of August so after it gets detailed and readied I will drive it a little this year. However, next year I intend on driving it much more.

It is loud, it’s fast, it’s cool looking and most of all I just love that car. I know most of you can relate to that so that is why I decided to share my love of this car. I hope all of you at some point find the car of your dreams no matter what it is. Cars and women come and go in life. This one is a keeper.

This is a 1972 Plymouth Satellite sent in by Gabriel Mopar. I’m not sure if that is his real last name, but if it is, that’s one cool last name to have, that’s if you are a Mopar fan!

The car resides in the Canary Islands, Spain, originally coming from Argentina. It has a 318ci. engine and is in original condition, imported to the Canary Islands some time ago.

We don’t have any more details about the car, but we know it is driven regularly. all parts need to be imported, but that hasn’t stopped the car being enjoyed round the islands.

This is a great story of a restoration project that isn’t just long-term, but sounds like a long time timekeeper.
Read the overview below by Ash Oliver and his intentions for the car.

‘The car was my grandpa’s. He gave it to my father when he was 20-ish. My dad never did anything with it really, it kind of sat around for ten years.’
Around April my buddy and I where talking about cars and I told him that my dad’s Impala was available and ran it just needed some work and that’s when we started working on it every day after school. We would work on the motor till dark and it took us about a week of hard work to get it going.’

‘Since then I’ve been firing it up about once a week just to hear it go and I’ve been doing everything I can to restore it but it’s hard being 16 and trying to restore it with my lack of funding, parts, etc.’
‘Anyway, it has a 327 ci. motor and a 4 speed transmission. At one point in its life it was an automatic but someone butchered my floor pan and put a standard one in it. The odometer reads 300,000 miles and it’s completely stock. It hasn’t been lowered or had those stupid rims.’

1963-Impala-Project-1565645

‘My future plans for it are first sanding the bodywork. It needs a radiator flush, a transmission fluid change and a new throw out barring. It’s power steering hooking back up then it would run like a dream.’

‘I also plan on redoing the carpets. ‘I’m going to rhino line the trunk and redo the upholstery. I’m not going to sell it as I’ve noticed that some older people’s biggest regrets are selling there cars, so this is mine for keeps.’

When it comes to readers write submission we usually just get the one car. In this case, it’s two for the price of one.

These vehicles are owned by Manu Huentz and his brother and have done quite a bit of Intercontinental travelling, now located in France.

Read on for the low-down on these vehicles from Manu.
‘The first car is a ’70 Mustang Boss 302 stored since 26 years in Canada and is now in France.’
The 2nd is my Brother’s ’71 camaro.’

‘The Boss was originally ordered by a dealer. The marti said that the car is 1 of 33 in this paint(calypso coral)/trim combination and it mean this is a one of a kind with the white interior and other options.’
‘The car was imported by a friend’s garage, www.66autoshop.fr.’ ‘The Boss has a 4 shift manual transmission and we are soon going to start a light restoration.’

‘For the camaro, the car was assembled in Switzerland.’ ‘It originally had a 307ci, it now a 350ci th350, 18″ panther wheels.’

‘The paint job was done by the french airbrusher DJOCE (there’s ghost emblem in the white paint.)

This is a great story about a rescued 1963 Impala SS by Rob Bentler.

‘We found this sitting in the garage since 1979 where my wife’s Dad parked it there. We towed it from Minnesota to Alaska this spring.’
‘We had a lot of rust to repair. New sections of frame and all new floor pans with homemade rockers.’

‘Hope to get the exhaust built on Tuesday and enter her in a car show next Friday in the “Still in Works” category.’

‘The history behind the car is it was my Father in laws who passed away last December. He never would say much about the cars he had (a 71 Mustang Conv., 63 Impala SS, ’67 442, ’71 Chevelle). Don’t know if he trusted me yet or not!’

1963-Impala-SS-1458435

‘Either way, after he passed, we went back there to clean up his estate and found all the cars in the garage. We picked this one to rebuild.’
It’s been a lot of work but also, lots of fun every day. It has a ATK performance 454 with 500 HP. TH400 train, 3000 stall and Currie 9″ with 373 gears. Should be really fun on the street.’

I built it for the wife, but also for me to run on the track every now and then too. Her Dad was a big gear head and owned a Phillips 66 gas station/garage in Osseo MN for his whole life. We kept the gas station but are letting his friend run it now. Anyway, thanks for letting me post this up on your page. I love seeing all the classic cars each day.’

Here is a great restoration story for you all. Joe Hanna picked up this car as a restoration projectmany months later, you can now see the product of his work.
Over to Joe to explain….

‘1973 Mustang Mach 1, 351 Cleveland Q code cobra jet, hurst top loader, 4 speed, all matching numbers…’

‘I rescued this car in October 2015 and spent just about every waking moment bringing it back to life. It was originally a blue glow in color but we decided since we were keeping it, we would go with Fords magnetic metallic gray.’

‘The restoration has been extensive with a complete motor rebuild on the 351 Cleveland Q code cobra jet motor. A mild cam with elderbrock Torquer intake, holly 650 double pumper, and holler headers in addition to an MSD ignition set up.’

1973-Ford-Mustang-Mach-1-1345

‘The body work was extensive with repairs to the floor boards which were too bad, just some small patch panels welded in, however the car did receive new front fenders, doors and rear quarters and outer wheel houses.
Also, the inner front fender aprons, battery tray and radiator support were replaced. All new brakes and rotors staying with stock set up of front disc and rear drums.’

‘I did all the work myself except laying down the paint. Thanks to some good hotrod buddy’s that run a paint and tire shop I got that done fairly cheap. The paint job is exceptional. The interior is all original except for new carpets. I removed all the interior prices and cleaned and re-dyed all of the components making it exceptional in appearance. Here are some pics of the car two where it is right now.’

Sure enough, I stopped on I 90 to stretch my legs after a long ride, get some grub and to my amazement, this beauty turned up.

This beautiful 31 Ford Model A was in the lot where I parked. Now, I have been at this famous Angola rest stop many times before and it seems I always see something of value.
Last year it was a cool Chevy from the fifties. This year, a sweet ’31 Ford Model A from the Long Island Model A club.

The car was awe inspiring. Not a scratch on it. So nice many of the other rest stoppers came over and posed for pictures with it. I was parked right behind it and many asked if it was mine.

Anyway, hats off to the owner whomever that was because the car was perfect. One could see many hours were put into this restoration. I had one thought however. It was so nice I wish they would have used an enclosed trailer for their sakes. Yes, we would not have seen a prime example of a model A but, it would eliminate bugs, stone chips and other flying debris. Regardless, it made me pine for my own 1928 to be finished. I hope to drive it by mid August ( way behind schedule) but I would love to drive it this year. My ultimate goal is to get my 94 year old mother in it before she slips any further. Mine is black with red wheels and is as stock as we could have made it. We had one issue with ethanol based fuels already and we learned from it. See, when the government tries to help a situation they generally screw it up and here is a prime example. Anyway, I wanted to share my good luck with you and hope you will send us photos of your highway discoveries.

This fine looking 1969 sent in by Kelly Jean Maguire, proves that you don’t have to have some supercharge monster to enjoy your ride.

In this case, it’s a four-door 1969 Nova. Not the most powerful, but that doesn’t matter. It’s the love of owning a vehicle like this that matters and keeping it in tiptop condition.

Although Kelly says that it’s not say it is not a show car, from the looks of it, we would be happy to see this at any car show.

‘The most “uncool” Nova ever. ’69 307 four door with two speed superglide and an AM Radio.’ ‘She’s not a show car. I drive her in Arlington and DC pretty much every week.’

‘Before/after pictures of the Edlebrock Manifold, the new 4 bbl Quadrajet, and the new carpet.’
1969-Nova-15

‘That is the original 2 bbl. And the 4bbl Quadrajet I replace it with (before the carb rebuild).’
1969-Nova-14

‘Here is the bare floor before putting in new carpet.’
1969-Nova-13

‘Here is the new carpet before and after installation, along with a new fuel tank.’
1969-Nova-12

‘A shot under the hood once I got everything running well.’

This 1969 Dodge Charger was sent into us by Ash Oliver on behalf of his buddy.

The car was rescued from a Indiana reservation where the car was rusting away. The original 440ci. engine was too far gone to restore, which was replaced with a 383ci.

The car was then meticulously brought back to life and given its current yellow paint job.
As you can see, everything has been brought back to almost factory condition with original or OEM parts.

Restoration projects are always great to see, especially when they’ve gone from nothing to greatness.

Eric Parker sent us his Trans Am to show the full restoration process, taking the car back to its bare metal and then to as original as possible.

We especially liked the images without the fire chicken on the hood. It kind of gives the car a more sinister, restomod look, Dr Trans Am would not be a Trans Am without it.

Just check out some of the images below and see if you are inspired.

‘My Numbers matching 1977 Pontiac Trans AM I picked up for $1800 three years ago. Still a work in progress. It has a 4 speed 400.
I have invested about $12000 in to it already.’

Sometimes, nothing can keep a muscle car down.
These images are of Jack Haden’s Mustang after the Oklahoma tornado.

This Oklahoma tornado survivor toughed out last month’s devastating storm, and amazingly, so did his car.

Moore resident Jack Haden made it through the May 20 disaster by taking cover in a storm cellar. His prized 2003 Ford Mustang, however, was swept up by the tornado and found wrapped around a tree, according to KSBI. But he soon discovered that the heavily damaged car was still functional, and it also had a surprising effect on other locals.

(photo)

“Once we got the car off the tree and drove it home in the condition it was in, we noticed quite a few people taking pictures of it, smiling, laughing,” Haden told KSBI. The barely-there car was providing some much-need comic relief for the people of Moore.

Haden, an aircraft mechanic, fashioned the beat up car into a “convertible,” and he’s been using it to spread some cheer around the hard-hit town. According to KSBI, he even paid a visit to Plaza Towers and Briarwood Elementary schools.

“Not even a tornado can break the stang!” Haden commented.

When you hear about somebody owning a car for decades, especially one in as good condition as this one, you can’t help but be impressed. It takes time and dedication, especially if you want to keep the car in fine condition.

Tim has owned this car since 1979 and has kept it in meticulous condition ever since.
When you have owned a car this long, it is more like a marriage. It has its ups and downs, money needs to be spent along the way, you may even feel like parting company at times. But in the end, it is all so worth it.
Well, in this case it is………..

‘This is my 1970 Torino GT that I’ve owned since 1979.’

‘It’s a 351 4v automatic with many options. It was sold inside Ford as a test vehicle according to the Marti report. These two pictures were taken 30 years apart. The car has never been restored other than a new interior and a respray in 1979 before I bought it. The laser stripe is the original one.’

Although not the most common of muscle cars out there, it’s interesting to see a Mexican version of one of the classics.

Luckily, the exterior was already in fine condition as with the engine, so it only took minor modifications to turn the car into a street worthy racer and daily driver.
As you can see, things like the internal strengthening are still present from its race days, but it also gives it that air of full on racer, which is always a cool thing.

‘My 1969 Camaro, 400 Small block bored .40 over, 410 rear.’
‘It was a race car when I bought it 10 years ago. It took me a while to get it looking the way it does now. I detuned the engine to make it more of a Streetcar.’
‘I had the interior redone, I put new Billet Specialties Street Lite wheels on it and new Goodyear tires.’

Over in Norway, a muscle car is a family affair. This Camaro has been in the family for many years and is now due for a restoration.
The car was originally bought to be restored, but only got as far as having the engine taken out before it was left for years.
Svein is just starting the journey of putting this car back together, so stay tuned for future updates.

‘A 1970 SS. Orginally a 396 BB. I got it from my dad who took out the engine 18 year ago and left it in a barn. I am now in the process of restoring it.’
‘Info – First time registered in Norway 7th August 1971. Original SS matching. Vin 124871N529102. My dad bought it in ’91. Used it only on sunny days. He was going to restore it in ’96 and just took out the engine and front. He left in a barn to complete at a future date, but never got round to it. I know that there are not so many of these left. Here are a few photos from When my dad had it and i was little.’

We have laws and the police to protect us in troubled times. We have laws that make us drive a top speed of say 75 mph in a desolate part of the country, yet we build cars that will go 200 miles an hour.
Why would anybody build or anybody buy a car that can go 200 mph on the street when it is illegal and possibly unsafe? Great question and I am not smart enough to provide an answer.
But, that same question could be put to use in many other products we use daily. Why would anyone buy a wrist watch for twenty grand when another watch for thirty bucks tells the same time? The list is endless but, people generally want unique things or things that are better than someone else’s. Its how it has always been.

My choices are easy at times. Sometimes I just need to burn rubber. I will drive my old cars for days that are slow and clunky. Then, it hits me. Get in your hot rod you fool and open that baby up. And I do.
I love to smoke those ties, shift the gears hard and hear the chirp between shifts. That is what our fast muscle car life is all about.

The hell with these little rice burners and ugly cars. I want to get in my classic hot rod anytime I want to and live the dream.
Just check out how many car shows, cruises and such happen every week in this country. You will lose count. Ever been to SEMA in Las Vegas? I have and it is by invite only. People come from all over the world to display there products and just as many and maybe more come just to look.
Thousands and thousands of people show up every year. It is an amazing event and if you ever get a chance to see it please do it. It will fulfill many bucket lists for speed, power, torque, and dreams will be fulfilled.

Anybody who is somebody is there. Why? Because we all love cars and want the things that can do 3 times the speed limit. Even countries where fuel is seven bucks a liter and the cars get 50 mpg and are the size of your couch show up.

Last I was there I saw a group from Dubai. Turns out Dubai and areas near there are hot for American hot rods. Sweden is too. Many other counties love to import big American cars like Lincolns and Caddys but what they really want is the hot rods. Imagine that? So, if any of you big rich tycoons overseas wants a couple of hot rods, just wire me the money and you too can have a bit of Americana.
We always loved our cars in this country. A lot of countries are thought of as transportation only. Not here my friends.

Europe has a better rail system by far but we own the automobile market. Don’t believe me? Count the amount of web sites, magazines put out monthly, the car shows, the aftermarket business and keep adding them all up and you will see why the automobiles are number one in the world.
Years ago I drove a car that was built and driven in the old Soviet Union. Words cannot describe how bad that car was. I was so out of place because that crappy car was built to go from A to B and that is it. We would not put up with that. If it cannot smoke the tires, be louder than it needs to be and can’t be loaded with aftermarket stuff, then forget it. It is the soul of our being.

the later models were also not the most renowned for power, mainly due to emission regulations. However, they are still fantastic looking cars and great platforms to be upgraded.

Shane sent us his 1981 model which has a upgraded powertrain among other things. It’s still a work in progress, being upgraded from the inside out. So, stay tuned for the future work on this build.

You know when you see certain images, your emotion readings go into the red, which is exactly what happened when we saw the images of Jason’s Buick.
A slight wince, sharp intake of breath, but that must be nothing to what Jason felt when he got his car back.
Luckily, it’s on the road to recovery. We just wish Jason well and hope his ride gets back to its original state.

If any of you guys can help him out, just message him on his Facebook link below.

‘It has a 355 bolted to a modified 700r4 and 373 gears. Unfortunately, I left it with my dad while I was out of town and he hit a parked car. So I’m currently working on getting her fixed. This is it’s current state.’
‘Its starting to come together. Thank God I can use a lot of Nova parts. I’m having the hardest time finding original Buick parts.’

This is a fine looking Camaro from one of our readers, who ironically seems to have the same name. You really can’t get any cooler than that!

This Camaro is on the road to a restomod. More of a mechanical overhaul than anything else with an upgraded engine, suspension and brakes.

The car was bought in fantastic shape as you can see, with a non-original 454 engine. This gave the idea to do some subtle upgrades to bring some components to modern day while still keeping the classic looks.

We think keep it as is, but when you have a car like this, you just have to tinker away.

‘A 454ci., 454 big block and original Muncie transmission.’
‘I’ll drop 572 in few months and see what happens…’

Here we have a wonderful submission to our readers rides in the form of a 1967 Ford Falcon Sport.

The Ford Falcon was built between 1960 and 1970 and is arguably the forerunner to the muscle car generation.

This example is a third-generation model, built from 1966 to 1970. The top end engine model back then was a 302ci. Windsor V8, but Gordon opted for a little extra ‘oomph’ in the form of a 428 cobra jet. Probably one of the sweetest Ford engines you can drop in a car like this one.
A regular on the show circuit, this is truly one ‘thumper’ of a car.

‘It’s a 428 cobra jet @ 550 hp, C6 tranny 3 speed auto, Ford 9″ 3.73 spool gears, Mini tub, Rear leaf springs with panhard, rod suspension.’
Its a 11 sec quarter mile car.’
‘I bought the car last May.’

Original Californian car. The Dodge is the car from my son Bas who is 24 years old.
He bought the car 3 years ago. It stood in a barn in Holland for 8 years.
At that moment the car still had the original paint and vinyl top. After a time he decided to repaint the car and took off the vinyl top and rebuilt the 318 engine.
The interior is still original.
19 inch alloy wheels, lowered the suspension a little bit.
The original service book from the USA was also in the car.
A Beautiful running car.

‘400HP built 350’

‘The previous owner sold it because he was moving to Costa Rica and thought there was no possibility of bringing it with him. Well, I brought it to Costa Rica and can’t wait to see the look on his face when I encounter him here with his car that has gotten so much more complete.’

The car was fully restored when bought by Calvin. As you can see, this is one magnificent example of a ’71 Corvette.

Here we have a great submission from down under from Matthew Hickey and his fantastic looking 1967 Mustang fastback.

‘Hi guys, Matthew Hickey (from Sydney,Australia) is my name and here is my ’67 fastback in Highland green.
The car was taken back to bare metal a couple years back.
My kids love it, as they’ve grown up with it since they were really little.’

‘My 67 mustang (3 speed hurst shifter manual)had to be taken back to bare metal. Its got a 302 with 289 heads. Looks and sounds fantastic.’

‘Even though there was no rust, there were some sunken divots/cracks on the roof line & the panel beater said ‘the previous owners to the car had taken the cheaper way out & kept adding paint on to the existing duco.
If we just sprayed over on top & I’d have the samething happen in a couple years time. So it was taken back to bare metal & painted in my favourite Highland green.

It was done in Sydney & it was an amazing job with commendable comments everywhere I go on how good it looks. The paint & panel is or very close to concours condition.
I deleted some side badging & deleted FORD on the bonnet to give it a bullitt look.
When I to muscle car shows with my kids, we notice that our ’67 fastbacks paint/panel is up there with top 10%.

1967-Mustang-fastback6546

It was originally imported by a muscle car dealer & I had it trailered to Sydney & am the 1st Aussie owner to register it in Australia.
Together with on going mechanicals to engine, diff, suspension, interior upgrades & Kelsey Hayes disc brakes, the car has transformed from a daily driver to something special.
Ive owned it now for 8 years & is a part of myself & my kids life. We have also watched it increase in value over the last 8 years, so it’s a good investment as well.(If I had of bought a bmw for 50k 8 years ago instead, you’d be lucky to get $12k Aus for it now.)
I’ve had a car full of girls sing mustang Sally to me at a set of traffic lights & a guy yelling out he’s gonna buy it off me there n then at another set. But it’s never for sale.’

Mike is currently in the process of restoring this ’67 Plymouth Valiant back to its former glory.

The idea here is a classic cruising machine. A car they can be proud of as a daily driver and get the benefits and thrill of a classic ride.

I grew up in the city of Chicago and there were quite a few bonus points available in the car world.

We were regulars at what is called JC Whitney now, but then it was called Warshawsky’s. It was an amazing place to say the least. Another highlight was going to Mr. Norms. Better known as Grand Spaulding Dodge in the day. Not a giant super center like we see today in our local dealers but certainly a lot going on. Actually the place was very cramped as they had a big inventory and customers from all over the place.

It’s all gone now but the building is still there. People still drive by or drive in to the parking lot to get the sensation that was the spirit back in the 60’s and 70’s.
People come and take pictures of the building today although empty and a bit run down but, it helps fulfill an inner desire for a time now gone.

It’s one of the those places that if the walls could talk you would stay for hours and listen. The shameful thing about places like this and many others is that they are gone forever. Just a memory holds you to the place. Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago and Yenko in the Pittsburgh are prime examples of that time frame. I know we all wish they were all still there.

At times our memories of places like this are much better than the place ever was in the hay day of it all. So, dream on and carry that torch and long for the days that are no longer with us.

Paul E. Bierly sent us his incredible ’69 RoadRunner which he has slowly modified over the years to be a drag strip winner.
The car is retired and is now a family car which is a consistent winner at Mid West car shows.
This RoadRunner is a great example of how the straightforward design of the classic muscle cars can be adapted to anything you want. Family car, dragstrip beast, it’s really only limited by your imagination.

‘The Roadrunner Was Bought in August 1969. I run the car at North Omaha Drag Strip and as a Drag Car at Ralston, Nebraska in the H/Super Stock.
The Engine has Duel Quads on a High-Rise OFFENHOESER manifold.
Hooker Competition Headers Accel Hot Coil and 8mm Spark Plug Wires.
Inside the Car Are Two 1969 AMX Bucket Seats, and a 1969 Charger Centre Council.
Also 2 Inch Diameter Rollbar with Arm Supports to the Frame.
The Car Has Travelled All over the Midwest and Even Climbed to the Top of Pikes Pike, Colorado.’

Not your typical picture of a fast muscle car but of a map of the United States instead. Why?

When you are in our hobby its best to have friends all over the country as your representatives. You cannot be everywhere at once so build a network of contacts for yourself. Cloning would be great if possible but at this stage it’s only a dream.
In my case, I have friends on the west coast, Arizona, up in North Dakota, the mid west, the south as far as the Carolinas and the east coast. I need a southern Florida friend yet and it would great to have one in Texas. Lots of great cars in Texas and south Florida so I need to step up my game there.

Tracking down that elusive car
The reasoning of course is simple. I cannot be everywhere and having friends out there willing to go look at something for me is a bonus.
Once they get there then they can FaceTime me and do a walk around with the camera and I get to see what they see live. No more driving eight hours and finding out the ’69 Corvette L88 is a piece of crap and not even an L88. The system does have some flaws but it sure beats the alternative.
This obviously applies to anywhere in the world. No matter where you are, a contact or two can save the day, even on the other side of the planet.

Give it a thought and build your base if you are serious about finding that next prized car. Having representation in your name is a big darn deal and may help strike a better deal when the seller knows you are very serious and not a tire kicker.

It’s a question we only had to start asking ourselves a few years ago and this is a prime example.
Should I spring for a new Cobra GT with all the latest gizmos, bells and whistles, or take a ’67 such as this and build it my way?

Both have great styling, both would have great engine power and I assume both would have the safest features you desire. I say that because anyone who would spring for this kind of money in a resto mod would certainly install the best brakes and tires packages.

The cost might be the same for both. In the case of the ’67 you would have the cost of finding the right ’67 to start your build and go up from there.
The new 2016 is done for you but may lack a few things that could be “personal” items. You might want the tach in a different place. Maybe Reco seats are not your style or you prefer a Borla exhaust. The list could be endless but if you just went straight up against a 2016 Mustang GT versus an older 1967 Mustang restomod I still think it would a tough decision. Some would argue only styling mattered and that becomes a personal choice again.

From a website that usually promotes the classics, it almost seems like heresy considering a new muscle car over an old one, but it really comes down to priorities and what you want from a car. Budget is usually the biggest factor, then time and resources. Many times it simply which one you prefer as an all-round car. A well maintained classic can be equally as good a daily driver as a new car, but may need more regular maintenance. However, a new car may set you back more money than it does need a service.

I am sure there are loads of discussions on both sides. This might be a good question at your next Mustang club get together as I am sure this gets batted around once in a while. New vs old. Spy vs spy and all that fun stuff.

Many have argued this was the first real Classic fast muscle car in 1964. They have great arguments and I tend to listen to the story but I am not sure I believe it yet. Why? Well, I know some early 60’s Dodge’s and Plymouth’s that had max wedge engines in them that were quite the car. The problem was they did not sell many.

So, if the argument is all the above and the sales are brought to the party then I will agree. The GTO or Goat as it was called was a clear sales winner from ’64 all the way to say ’71. They had powerful V8 engines available along with rag tops and plenty of options.

I will say my favorite GTO is the model years ’69 and ’70 because of the pointed grille. I love that styling cue and when GM brought out “The Judge” sales really came off the hook.
For anyone not clear on the GTO beginnings, it was our friend John DeLorean who tricked his own company into building the GTO. He was eventually a hero for that.
He was also the backbone for the Chevy Vega that was not a good car until they tried the Cosworth Vega. The Cosworth Vega was a good street car but it came too late and the Vega was doomed. DeLorean also brought us the DeLorean car. You know the metal car with a stainless steel skin, used in the Back to the Future movies and became a cult classic. Sorry to say, sales tumbled and John DeLorean got caught up in some bad things that ended his car company and his job status in our industry.
But, let’s focus on his greatest success. The GTO. It’s a marvelous car and it sells like ice water in hell. Go watch or go see an auction for yourself and see this car bring big numbers.

It’s a classic fast car that stood the test of time now and I only wish Pontiac could have survived as well. It’s always bad to see a car company go belly up. Unless it’s Scion.

This is a typical American garage with a car somewhere in the process.

I think we have all been there when we start a project with high hopes and dreams of finishing her on time for the car show cruise season. Instead, this is what happens to all too many. Dust piles up, the tires go flat, tools get scattered and when you walk into the garage all desires to go at the car again get lost.

A solution
There is a solution and it starts with the basics. Put all the tools away. Wash the car. Organize the garage and then leave. Come back another day and when you swing open the door it is an entirely new scene.
They say good way to decide on a important decision, is to gather all the facts, get them in order, then go away and do something completely different. Then decide. It’s the same with sorting out the garage. Get things in order, go do something else, then come back fresh.

You can return to your original plan and start a new. The car in the picture certainly is worth all the work and effort so convince yourself you are doing the right thing. Turn on some music and maybe crack a cold one to get started. You need that push to start again and these simple ideas will work. Now, it’s up to you to stay focused on the task at hand and not get buried again and have the same problem in a short span.

Car restoration can be a lengthy and time-consuming process, especially if you do it all yourself. Focus on small jobs, one at a time, then move on. If you think of everything at once, it’s too much.

Remind yourself you have a darn cool car and that when you are done people will admire your work and many thumbs up will come up your way. Nothing would be worse than selling your project locally only to see some other doofus finish your ride and now show it off to the world.
It’s your baby so get out there and rock that cradle.

I love classic fast cars, obviously muscle cars and I love trains. Mix the two together and I am one happy cat. This picture shows everything that I love and hate about both. It is why the image is so great.

Let’s assume the photograph was taken the mid to late 1930’s since the car fits into that frame work. Both the car and the locomotive engines were pollution makers at there best. The train ran on coal and the car obviously on gasoline. If you have ever worked with coal you know it is very dirty. And the evidence is pouring out the stacks of this train.
Today, both cars and trains are nearly pollution free. As are factories across the world. Society agreed at one point we could not keep polluting our air forever and everyone seems on board except possibly a few countries.

I can recall a time as late as the 1950’s and 60’s that a mans white shirt would be brown at the end of the day from the soot in the air. Today if I see pollution like this I cringe. There is simply no reason we should pour out the black smoke like we did years ago. Who wants filthy air or water? The line would be short.

So, we all love to reminisce about the good old days but like any old guy that has seen both sides of the coin not everything was good then. Jets would pour black smoke out of the engines, diesels were very dirty and we made excuses at our factories that the black smoke was a necessary by product for the products produced. All that is hog wash. It did make for some great back drops to old movies. The look and suspense of those old back and white films wouldn’t be the same without the steam and smoke.

Today, we have clean diesel technology. Heavy duty trucks do not pour out the coal like they once did, and our trains are as clean as we can imagine. The good old days are here now and in the future as we get even smarter and better than we are now.

I love my old cars but will not allow them to blow black smoke, blue smoke or any smoke anymore. There is just no justification for it. When I see how far we have come in the diesel business since just the year 2002 I feel proud we put our heads together and figured this out.

This is essentially why muscle cars will live on. Most think the huge displacements will die out, but alternative fuels can be used and the cars adapted if needed. These old trains still run and we can enjoy the bellowing smoke once in a while as we know its a one off. The smoke then becomes a treat not a threat.

The modern era of muscle cars now come in all shapes and sizes. the V8 is still king, but you can still have fun in all the other editions.
Troy Briggs sent us his 2004 Monte Carlo SS, to show that you can still have fun in a V6. The powertrain of the 3.8L L67 supercharged V6 has 240HP. Enough for everyday and to still have some of that muscle car DNA.

‘The car is a 2004 Monte Carlo with a 3.8L L67 Series II supercharged V6 engine. Automatic transmission with overdrive. American racing wheels. The car is living here in Canada.’
‘I purchased the car from a friend 2 years ago. He is a police officer. He had the car chipped so the top speed is a little over 130mph. Hope to hand the car over to my son when he is old enough.’

Just like a football team that loses its funding, its best players and gets relegated, muscle cars from the mid-70s, lost their ‘Je ne sais quoi,’ due to emission controls, insurance prices and basically being squeezed from all angles.
Just like any dark era, it is just a period of time which comes and goes. Now the golden era is back.

From Great to Bad
The end was very near for this Dodge Charger mid. 70’s, then it actually got worse.
If you study a ’66 – ’72 Dodge Charger you knew you had something very special. By the time the tanks arrived on the streets with the 360 Lean Burn V8 we all knew it was over.

At the back of this car someone even put a decal on it that says “Pop’s car”.
Some old guy owned it and thought it was cool enough to jack it up a bit and put on chrome wheels along with chrome tips on the ends of the exhaust pipes.
The car was heavy, slow and not a muscle car at all. Only a few years before, these were rolling works of art with powertrains that still echo today.

I had a very good friend that had a ’77 Chrysler Córdoba which was the sister car and it was a slow hunk of metal. It rode great but that 360 V8 was a dog. Little cars were later produced with the Charger name plate stuck on them, made lots of people like me run for the exits.
Chrysler lost its way back then and introduced Aspens, Volare, Colt, Arrow, New Yorkers and so on. How often do you see a Dodge Aspen or Plymouth Volare today restored or even made into a resto mod. These are now classed as classics themselves, but not a patch on the golden era.

Junkyards of the early 80’s saw many a prized muscle car scrapped. People back then just did not see the worth in these cars apart from the most rare examples, but this was not uncommon. Many vehicles which are now worth a king’s ransom, were junked on a regular basis back in the day. People just saw them as ‘old’ cars. ‘Old’ used to be very bad and no one wants an old car, right?
Luckily, not everybody thought that way and now every muscle car worth saving at least gets a second glance.

Back to the good times.
Now we are back to the good times. The horsepower wars are back on, the big three are making ever better muscle cars and making enough waves to make the competition sit up and notice in design, performance and price.

Muscle cars may have lost their way in the mid-70s, but they are now back and stronger than ever. We can’t ask for more than that.

I saw this picture recently and I thought it belonged in the file of it’s never to late, maybe…
I say that as when I cruise through the ads., I am always amazed at how other people value things. Whether it is a classic or a new car the person that owns it always sees a value way beyond reality. Recently in an ad. I contacted a guy who was selling a sweet ’93 Mustang full of goodies.

The right price.
The guy took very good care of the car and he elected to add a bunch of add ons. Add ons will never get the return you think they will because that was a choice you made.
The guy wanted $7900 firm and he made it clear to me he will not move from that number. He claimed he did not need to sell it so if he does not get his number he will keep it.
I noticed the house the guy lives at is small but nice. I also noticed a one car garage. That one car garage might be the key to the deal. I get the feeling he bought or will buy something else soon and he wants the new toy in the garage. Thus, no less than the 7900 bucks.
If he does he may lose money but really a 1993 car? A thirteen year old hot rod Mustang with an automatic. The guy is a nice guy but he is off base with his selling price. I gave the car some thought but he is being unrealistic at this point and I told him so in our first conversation. It’s only now it might have sunk in.

It reminds me of a guy I worked with. He was trying to sell his Challenger with a 6.2 hemi and a Kenny Bell Super charger and all kinds of toys. His asking price was very high because he took great care of the car, added on premium options and if he sold it for what the real price should be, he feels he would take a loss.
That was a summer and a half ago and he still has it. When he first put it on the Internet with the price he did, not one inquiry. I told him that people looking at these types of cars are not stupid. They have done some homework and know that this asking price is way too high. So, here it sits and sits. He wanted to sell it and buy a Hellcat Challenger but the dealer offers were low so he tried himself and bombed.

Market value is the key here. It’s easy now to get a rough estimate of what a car may be worth from information online. online ads., check out our ‘for sale‘ section of the website, many places. That’s if you are either buying or selling.
Be realistic with the pricing, do your research, then life becomes a lot easier.

I have not written much about the Ford Falcon or Mercury Comet so I better because I really liked them. They were the same car as it was the old trick the car companies did by rebadging a car with a different name even though it really was the same. Pure laziness by the American car companies for sure. The big three all did it and everyone knew but for the life of me I don’t understand why anyone paid more for the Comet versus the Falcon.

Dad had one of these in the early 60’s with the big powerhouse 140 six cylinder engine. His had a automatic transmission and it was an ok car. It was just too small for a growing family.

Today these light weights get our attention for a very good reason. They are light. Duh. Yes, take this very light automobile and shove in a big engine.
It has been done over and over because if you lift the hood there is plenty of room under there for nearly anything. The interior is easily modified for bucket seats and a shifter if you so desire and if you really want to go to the edge, look in the trunk.
Open that lid and you will see plenty of room for nitrous tanks or air ride compressors and more. I personally dig this car but throw a Falcon Ranchero my way and I really light up. There is one currently on Craigslist in my area for $2500.00 so I opened the ad. up looking and wishing for all good news. Well, it’s all bad news. The car is a shell and over the years people have hacked through this poor Ranchero something awful. It’s too bad as I was thinking about the ultimate sleeper car. Imagine, a Falcon two door comes up to you with little dish hubcaps and you find out the hard way I dropped in some huge crate engine. Gulp. Believe me when I say I read the ad more than once trying to convince myself there was enough there to justify this craziness but honestly the car might be a donor car at this point.

So, don’t forget about the little Falcon. It has really cool round taillights, a simple little grill but huge possibilities to either get her back to the way it was on the showroom floor or make your own classic muscle car.

I mentioned in a previous article I am looking at buying a used Shelby. I want a 2014 with the 662hp and then add a few gizmos to take me to near the 800 hp level. The problem, like many, justifying buying yet another car. Should I, shouldn’t I?

I was with my Mother over the weekend and it’s something she said to me that got the fire in the belly roaring again.
I already have a very loud and fast Mustang so do I need one with almost 800 hp? Of course not!
Mom said over the weekend I should go everywhere I want to and get anything I want because life goes very fast.

I got to do some more thinking on the big pony Mustang. Obviously I need money to get this going but it should be possible. save some money, sell one or two things, juggle the finances. It will take some time, but it’s do’able.

I dread the story of people who always come up short in life. We never go on vacation because…… We never get a new car because…. We live in this crappy house because…… And so on.
If you want something badly, especially a car, it may take time, it may take a long time, but it is possible.

When I get into an airplane I always notice just above the gray rainy clouds are blue skies and sunshine. You just need to reach a bit higher than the other guy.
I have many anecdotes of people who’ve worked for years to get their prized cars. Some save for years, some juggle their finances, some have even bought and sold a vehicle incrementally until they get the car of their dreams.
Whatever your route, with some careful planning, it’s all possible. This doesn’t mean go hungry all within a box by the side of the road, but have your long-term goal fixed and one day you will get there.

So, I don’t need a Shelby, but I also don’t want to pass away thinking I never even tried to own one.

Now, go touch the sun.

First, look at this beauty. Even if you are not a Ford guy have to admit this was a special car. I know I would like to have one in my stable, but here’s where the funny is. A guy I know is thinking about buying one of these monsters and decides he cannot go through with it. I ask him why of course because the car is deadly beautiful, very fast, very expensive and rare. His answer was that it was not a four speed so he was concerned about what people would think now and in the future resale value. Once I gathered my thoughts, I probed for more.

When did having a four speed in a classic car become a cardinal rule? It sounds better when you are shifting I guess. This guy is worried that if it does not have a third pedal it somehow won’t be considered as good. Give me a break. Just look at today’s cars and see what is being done. FCA put out a Hellcat engine in a Challenger / Charger with a 8 speed automatic. Any complaints? Nope. Everyone just mashes the throttle and hangs on for dear life. The new Mustang GT350 is a stick only for now. That may put some buyers out of the market but not many.

My background is the auto and heavy duty trucking industry. One does not buy a school bus anymore with a stick shift. Delivery trucks for around town are becoming all automatics. It is hard today to buy a pick up truck with a stick shift. There are plenty of heavy duty trucks on the road today that have Eaton automatic transmissions. Why? One is driver fatigue from shifting but the main reason is it is just easier on the driver as a whole. I have driven a 18 speed transmission Volvo truck and I can attest to the difficulty of getting through a few gears and then needing to stop and start the whole process over. It’s a royal pain to drive one versus starting the diesel up and moving the lever to D.

I have classic vehicles with both types of transmissions. Some days it is easier to just get in and drive. While you are waiting for the right rpm to shift at – my foot is planted squarely on the floor. Are dragsters stick shifts? Nope. The day will come soon too that NASCAR will go automatics. The reason is the driver has many things to do behind that wheel and the auto will make it one step easier.

So, don’t stop yourself from buying a classic fast muscle car just because you cannot shift. Take a 1970 Superbird with a 440. Is the automatic or 4 speed faster under equal conditions? Time marches on and the day of the stick shift are closing. Once upon a time it was only a column three speed and then it was moved to the floor for either a three speed or four, then it was a five speed. Today, a lot of high horsepower cars are automatics with 6 to 8 speeds and that will only increase. So, adjust for the change as it is here and it is not going away.
